Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg and Kevin Le Vu.
Meg and Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We started photographing weddings in college. My then friend, turned boyfriend then turned husband Kevin handed me a 5D MK I and taught me the basics: ISO, Aperture and shutter speed. I shot on a starter 85mm lens for about a year. We were both going to school while randomly taking on gigs that would expand our skills, our speed and our experience.
Slowly, Kevin started to book more and more gigs, leaning more and more towards weddings. It wasn’t really conscious until he failed a class in Nursing. Don’t worry; he still graduated Suma Cum Laude. And then he realized he couldn’t any job other than wedding photography.
I went on to “use” my degree to work for the County of Riverside as a Hazmat Specialist. All the while we were photographing weddings on the weekend and developing a very tight bond as business partners, lovers and friends. For a time, everything was so difficult. Shooting, working two jobs, taking care of 3 pets we somehow accumulated…and then I began to realize I could change my life the way that my husband did. He chose to do what we loved.
I wanted to do that too. And because he had worked hard to establish our photography business I could actually quit my county job and begin to find out what I “actually loved” was. I turned to video marketing, podcasting, online course making, book writing, video editing and so much more.
And for three years I went soul searching and developed the voice that helps our business market via video, social and the like. Funnily enough, I went soul searching to find out who I was with and without my husband, a “job” and a camera.
Now, I find myself behind the camera again, but as a teacher (hopefully a good one in time) that is helping to build our second wedding photography company.
Together, Kevin and I have struggled and fought for this business and the life we have now. I am so grateful for all those moments that were so hard on us business-wise and personally between us.
It’s made me brace for the journey we’re on right now as we continue to expand and grow into our thirties now. I can’t for what comes, as I know we can handle anything we want to take on.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggles for me were retaining my own identity when so much of what my husband is dictates what we do as a couple and in business.
Our company name is Kevin Le Vu Photography Inc. It takes a strong voice and a will to put forward your own purpose in a company that has no proof of trusting you, regardless of being husband and wife.
We had to find the right language when we needed things to change. And above all the strife we face, I think forgiveness of your partner’s humanity as well as your own is often the hardest to feel and give; but when you’re in the game for the long haul; in both marriage and business it’s a must.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kevin Le Vu Photography – what should we know?
We are a wedding photography business with 4-5 photographers under us.
I’m one part of a great company and my specialties are video marketing, writing, designing and development of training and systems. I contribute to the back end of our business and create ways for more efficiency and lead generation.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I wouldn’t be here without my husband. But I personally have had many mentors over the years, my parents, my sister, my many relatives, my mentor Jeff Koga; have all supported my journey, expanded my mind and challenged what I really wanted from my life.
