Today we’d like to introduce you to Kebahb Glanville.
Kebahb, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was young, I was always very energetic, outgoing and just loved moving. There really wasn’t a time when I was ever still. So naturally, that led me to dance. I would dance in front of people in public, in front of the T.V. during commercials, music videos, you name it lol. I would just move freely however I felt, and sometimes I would choreograph and film little routines that I would make up. As I got older, my love for dance grew and I wanted to start expanding my vocabulary of movement. So, my Mom and Dad would both take me to dance classes throughout the years and I would train in mainly Hip-Hop. I grew to love Hip-Hop music and dance so much that I told my Mom I wanted to join a dance team.
From there, I joined several dance teams and made a bunch of different friends. That led to me competing at dance competitions, and that allowed me to travel to cities and states to visit family along the way and see some places and things that I possibly would’ve never experienced. Over time, my love for dance grew so strong that I wanted to make it my career, and my source of income for the future. I started researching choreographers, jobs, dance platforms, agencies, dancers, dance studios, etc. Anything under the sun that gave me some insight into my next steps. I would essentially take dance classes online through watching YouTube dance classes of some of my favorite choreographers. I would critique myself and re-record it and continue to do that as my source of training. During that time, I was finishing up high school, so on the weekends or sometimes after school, my Mom and Dad would both take me to Philadelphia, New York/New Jersey to audition/take class in an actual studio. I still cherish those moments to this day because I soaked in so much when I had those opportunities.
During the last few years of high school, I started homeschooling in preparation for my jump into the dance industry. I decided and committed to making this my career. Halfway through my homeschooling, my Mom saved up as much as she could and her, Shish (my dog) and I took a seven days road trip all the way to L.A. The rest was history.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to being a dancer and being in this industry definitely isn’t smooth at all. I was around 16 years old, trying to pursue a career that I only knew from my own research. Didn’t know anybody in L.A and was still trying to figure out myself and if this was really for me. I started out training and taking every class I possibly could. I probably took four classes just about everyday. I did small projects and dance videos/films, concept videos here and there. But my ultimate goal was to be on stage, in music videos and in movies. So I went to dance agency auditions, hoping that I could get signed and that would bring me closer to my dreams. At the time, I was still a minor and couldn’t work the full days on set and in rehearsals. That definitely made it hard for me. I eventually signed with my first dance agency, but shortly after I left due to the relationship. I went on to audition seven times for another agency. On the 7th audition, I got cut and was on my way to walk out and was stopped by one of the choreographers and asked to stay. From there, I signed with the dance agency I’m currently with and went on to work with some of my dream choreographers/dancer on my dream jobs.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a Professional Dancer/Artist. I would say I’m known for my movement and my commitment to art. I’m most proud of the people, places and culture I’ve been blessed to witness because of dance/art. I’ve been able to travel to so many amazing countries and cities with some amazing people and it’s things I’ve literally daydreamed/dreamed of…my God is good all the time.
In my eyes, what I have to offer is beyond steps or movement. I have an inner fire, drive, love, excitement, hunger, growth, ear and drum that is the chauffeur to my movement and that fuels my connection to art, music and dance in such a special and unique way.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the dance/entertainment industry creating space for people who aren’t dancers and other creatives (such as singers, actors/actresses, painters, photographers, cinematographers, etc.) to experience and understand dance & movement in ways that they haven’t before. To be able to connect with dance deeper and to allow the merging of dance & other art forms further than what we see or know currently.
