Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Sutherland and Anne Staveley.
Circle of Doors Tarot is a full 78 card photographic tarot deck of women and accompanying guidebook that will be released in the summer of 2021. It has been six years in the making from the project’s original inception from our desire to create a photographic, multiple exposure series of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. From that series, we built an art installation for Burning Man 2014.
Earning an Honorarium Grant for “The Wheel of Fortune Tarot Project” led us to collaborate with writer and Oracle Ceci Castelblanco for the guidebook, Kasia Bilhartz for the interior flaming chandelier gazebo and numerous other models, muses, artists and builders as we created the Wheel, a Circle of 22 doors. Since the WOF’s magical playa debut in 2014, we knew the project needed to go on and interact with more people, spreading the empowering images and evolved messages of the Major Arcana with the masses. We have toured the installation to numerous festivals and events throughout the United States. Interacting with tens of thousands of people and building a momentum and dialogue of conscious conversation. It became clear to us (Anne Staveley & Jill Sutherland) that we needed to develop the Minor Arcana and complete the full deck.
In 2015 a tarot enthusiast and writer, Brian Duffy came upon the installation at the LIB Festival in Southern CA. Having heard this was a major arcana based tarot installation he circumnavigated the circle of doors with the intention of picking one of his favorite cards, “The Magician”. He reached for a doorknob to enter the structure and in a flash of destiny, changed his mind and went into the door to the left. He entered through the High Priestess (the card next to the Magician). The Priestess is all about deep intuitive knowing and divine feminine power. Within the WOF, Brian met us (Jill & Anne) & conversed about the beginning of the project and its future. From this encounter a deep friendship and collaboration grew to support the projects next unfolding. Believing in our blossomed friendship, Brian’s incredible writing skill and deep tarot knowledge, we invited him to write and collaborate with us for the Circle of Doors guidebook.

Circle of Doors Tarot is an offering of mystical, sacred ritual, inspired through the lens of photographers Anne Staveley & Jill Sutherland, written by Brian Duffy.
Our intention is to open the door to conscious conversation and to spark inspiration along our journey of life. The women within these cards tell the story of quintessential archetypes, seasons, cycles and experiences as spoken through the Tarot. Creating an all female deck at this time is a humble offering to bring women and their unique power back into focus. All of these photographs were created in ritual, each muse called to embody the timeless expression and message of each card. All are welcome here, male and female. We honor the divine masculine and feminine that are present in all of us. Circle of Doors is the voice of the goddess in all her forms, that is within each of us seeking to emerge. The world will naturally come into balance when women are treated equally and honored as the powerful creators that we are. We are the great granddaughters of the witches that were not burned; we are the mothers of the children who will create the new world; we are the bridge builders. We are lovers of our sacred lives, explorers, time travelers, photographers, artists, muses, feminists and women living a spiritual life, a heart-centered life honoring the whole. We are coming into balance. This is our offering to the divine feminine within us all – may these photographs and words invoke your highest inspiration and call upon you to walk fearlessly towards your dreams.
