Hidden Gems: Meet Angela Hsiao of SAGE LEGACY LAW LLP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Hsiao.

Hi Angela, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career with a strong focus on human rights—I studied Psychology and Art History at UCLA, and throughout my early years I worked with nonprofits like Amnesty International, Save the Children, and UNICEF. My goal was always to uplift those most vulnerable, especially children, and advocate for justice, dignity, and access on both a local and global scale. That desire to serve led me into law, thinking I would continue working in the human rights field.

But everything shifted when I became a mother. Suddenly, legacy wasn’t abstract—it was deeply personal. I started to see how many families, including my own, were unprepared for moments of crisis. I also saw how disconnected traditional estate planning could feel—transactional rather than transformational. I realized I could take all of my training, advocacy work, and lived experience and channel it into something more care-centered.

Sage Legacy Law was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when people were suddenly forced to confront their mortality, their priorities, and what truly mattered. I launched it as both a passion project and a lifeline—to bring clarity, compassion, and cultural sensitivity into a space that’s often filled with fear or avoidance.

Today, Sage Legacy is a boutique law firm rooted in care. We help families protect more than just assets—we help them preserve their values, relationships, and voices. I see my work as a continuation of my original mission: to serve, to protect, and to empower—especially across generations.

Being a mother, an advocate, and a connector has shaped how I approach every client and project—with heart, integrity, and the belief that our legacies are lived, not just left behind.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road—but a meaningful one.

Like many people in service-based careers, I had to learn how to care for others without abandoning myself. Early on, I poured so much into advocacy and nonprofit work that I struggled with burnout. When I transitioned into law, I found myself navigating a system that often felt rigid and disconnected from the human stories I was trying to protect. It was a challenge to find my voice in a profession that can be overly formal, especially as a woman of color and a mother trying to redefine what leadership and professionalism could look like.

Becoming a parent was a turning point—it forced me to confront not only the practical gaps in legacy planning but also the emotional weight of caregiving. And launching Sage Legacy Law during the pandemic was both a calling and a risk. I had no roadmap, no guaranteed clients, just the belief that people needed care-driven legal support more than ever.

At the same time, I’ve faced personal challenges—navigating family dynamics, health issues, raising two sons while building multiple businesses, and learning how to balance ambition with healing. The weight of responsibility can be heavy, especially when you’re doing work that blends the personal and the professional.

But the struggle has shaped my clarity. Every obstacle refined my vision. I’ve learned that smooth roads don’t build depth—but aligned, courageous ones do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sage Legacy Law is more than a law firm—it’s a care-centered practice built to protect what matters most.

We specialize in estate planning, trust administration, and legacy design for families, creatives, professionals, and heart-centered entrepreneurs. What makes us different is our approach: we lead with care, clarity, and cultural sensitivity. Our work isn’t just about drafting documents—it’s about holding space for the emotional, generational, and often unspoken layers that come with protecting a life and planning for the future.

At Sage, we believe your legacy includes not just your assets, but your values, your relationships, and your story. We help clients build legal plans that reflect who they are and what they truly want to pass on. Whether it’s a young family planning guardianship for their children, a single parent navigating multigenerational care, or a founder integrating their business into their estate, we offer a compassionate, trauma-informed, and deeply personalized experience.

What I’m most proud of is the trust our clients place in us. We’re often told that working with us felt different—that it brought them peace, empowerment, and even healing. That means everything to me.

Brand-wise, Sage Legacy Law reflects my values: thoughtful design, intentional systems, and a human-first experience. We aim to make legacy planning feel accessible, meaningful, and even beautiful. We also collaborate with wellness practitioners, creatives, and other aligned professionals to extend the conversation beyond legal documents—into storytelling, stewardship, and generational empowerment.

What I want readers to know is this:
Your legacy isn’t just what you leave behind—it’s how you live, love, and lead today.
And we’re here to help you protect it—on your terms, in your voice, with care.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
What often surprises people about me and my work is how deeply personal, intuitive, and soul-nourishing it feels—especially for something like estate planning.

Yes, I’m a trust and estate attorney. But what I truly do is create a space where people feel seen, supported, and empowered—not just as clients, but as full human beings. In my office, people often say it feels like talking to their best friend, their therapist, and their life guide all at once. There’s laughter, tears, clarity, and deep exhale moments. We go beyond logistics into legacy—into what matters most.

My intention is always to witness and affirm someone’s true essence: not just what they own, but what they’ve lived, what they love, and what they long to pass on. I help people connect the dots between their why and their how, and walk alongside them like a trusted partner as we build something lasting, protective, and aligned. We always say that once you’re our client, you’re part of the Sage family, and we mean it.

I bring all of me into this work—my background in psychology and art history, my experiences in global advocacy, motherhood, creativity, and healing. I’m deeply intuitive, but also strategic. I see the big picture and the unseen layers. I hold space for both grief and growth.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just provide legal services—I create an experience where people feel safe to dream, to reflect, to prepare, and to rise. My work is rooted in care and crafted around legacy as lived impact—what you’ve touched, nurtured, and inspired in this world. And it’s my honor to help protect and elevate that, every step of the way.
