After more than two decades in the tequila industry, Pamela Maria De La Luz set out to create something that reflected her own values: an organic, additive-free tequila crafted with patience, authenticity, and respect for tradition. But AgaveLuz is about more than what’s in the bottle — it’s also a vehicle for supporting animal rescue, a cause that’s been central to Pamela’s life for years. We caught up with her to talk about building a purpose-driven brand, earning trust in a competitive industry, and why she believes great businesses can make a meaningful difference.
Pamela, after spending more than 20 years in the tequila industry, you took the leap to create AgaveLuz, an organic, additive-free tequila brand built around both quality and purpose. What inspired you to launch your own brand, and what lessons from your career helped shape that journey?
I didn’t start AgaveLuz because I thought the world needed another tequila brand. I started it because I believed tequila deserved to be celebrated for what made me fall in love with it in the first place.
After more than 20 years in the tequila industry, I watched marketing become more important than what was actually in the bottle. Celebrity brands were everywhere, and many consumers had no idea how differently tequila could be made. I felt too many tequilas were moving away from the clean, natural flavor of cooked agave. I wanted to create a tequila that brought the focus back to the agave itself, one made with 100% certified organic blue Weber agave and water, without unnecessary shortcuts, and crafted the way I believe tequila was meant to be made.
Choosing certified organic was important to me because I wanted a tequila that was as clean and pure as possible. I wanted to respect the agave, the land it came from, and the people enjoying it.
That vision took nearly two years to bring to life. I refused to launch until the tequila tasted exactly the way I believed it should. Every detail mattered, from the production process to our custom bottle inspired by the agave piña. There were plenty of opportunities to compromise, but I knew that if I did, it wouldn’t be the company I set out to build.
One thing I’ve learned is that people can tell when something is real. They know when you’ve poured yourself into creating something you truly believe in. I still smile every time someone takes their first sip and says, “Wow, that’s really clean,” or, “That tastes like tequila the way I remember it.” Those moments remind me exactly why I started AgaveLuz.
One of the most unique aspects of AgaveLuz is that animal welfare isn’t an afterthought, it’s part of the company’s foundation. What motivated you to build giving back directly into your business model, and how has that mission resonated with customers and partners?
Helping animals has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I spent years volunteering with the Humane Society’s Pets for Life program, helping care for a colony of feral cats in Boyle Heights through trap-neuter-return efforts. I still volunteer today, and my home is shared with 14 rescue dogs and cats.
One rescue that will always stay with me is a tiny kitten my daughter found crying in a bush along the side of the road. He was only about a week old and had a badly injured leg. The emergency veterinarian recommended euthanasia because his injuries were so severe. I couldn’t accept that. I brought him home, cared for him around the clock, and watched him slowly recover. Today, Valentino still walks with a slight limp, but he’s healthy, happy, and reminds me every day why this mission matters.
When I decided to create AgaveLuz, I asked myself a simple question: How could I use everything I’d learned over the past 20 years to help more animals? That’s when I realized every bottle could become another opportunity to give back.
Supporting animal rescue wasn’t something we added later. It was part of AgaveLuz before we ever sold our first bottle. Today we support organizations including Sierra Pacific Fur Babies, Spay4LA, and Hearts Alive Village. We’ve also created fun ways for customers to participate, from our “Repawsado” dog toy and “Paws, Sip & Relax” dog shirts to restaurant partnerships where participating locations donate one dollar from featured AgaveLuz cocktails to local rescue organizations.
The response has been incredibly rewarding. People discover a tequila they love, then they discover they’re also helping animals. Our retail and restaurant partners have embraced the mission because it’s genuine. They know this isn’t something we added for marketing. It’s simply part of my life.
If every bottle we sell gives another animal a better life, then AgaveLuz is accomplishing exactly what I hoped it would.
Building a consumer brand from scratch requires perseverance, strategic thinking, and adaptability. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while developing AgaveLuz, and what advice would you offer entrepreneurs who are bringing their own products to market?
The biggest challenge wasn’t starting a tequila company. It was having the patience to build it the right way.
It took nearly two years to perfect the tequila because I wasn’t willing to settle for “good enough.” There were days when I wondered if we’d ever get there, but I knew I’d have to live with every bottle we sold. If it wasn’t something I was proud to pour for my own family and friends, it wasn’t ready.
That same mindset carried through every part of the brand. We invested in a custom bottle because I wanted the presentation to be as distinctive as the tequila inside it. Every decision took more time, but I believed people notice when something has been created with care.
Once we launched, we entered one of the most competitive categories in the spirits industry. With thousands of tequila brands on the market, simply making another tequila was never going to be enough.
Making a product is the easy part. Building something people trust takes a lot longer.
My advice to entrepreneurs is to build something that’s difficult to copy. Trends come and go, but people always remember a product that has a real story behind it. If you believe in what you’re building, don’t give up because progress feels slower than you expected. Trust takes time, but it’s worth earning.
AgaveLuz has earned media recognition and secured placement with major retail partners while staying true to its organic, additive-free philosophy. How have you balanced business growth with maintaining the authenticity and values that set your brand apart?
I’ve never believed growth should come at the expense of the principles that inspired the company in the first place.
Every important decision comes back to one question: Would I be proud to put my name on this? If the answer is no, we don’t do it.
We’ve had opportunities to move faster, lower costs, and take easier paths. We chose not to, because once you compromise the product or the mission, it’s almost impossible to earn that trust back.
That philosophy has guided every decision we’ve made. We chose certified organic ingredients because that’s what I wanted to drink. We spent years perfecting the tequila instead of rushing it to market. We invested in a custom bottle because we wanted every detail to reflect the care that went into what was inside.
As we’ve grown, those standards haven’t changed. Every batch still has to meet the expectations I set from the very beginning. If it doesn’t, we don’t bottle it.
You can’t fake passion. People know when a company is telling a story because it’s good marketing, and they know when it’s simply telling the truth. We’ve never had to invent our story. We’ve just lived it.
Looking ahead, what is your long-term vision for AgaveLuz, and what impact do you hope to make, not only within the tequila industry, but also through your ongoing commitment to animal welfare and purpose-driven entrepreneurship?
Of course I hope AgaveLuz continues to grow, but I don’t define success by the number of bottles we sell.
Twenty years from now, I hope people say, “AgaveLuz is the tequila that helps animals.” If that’s our reputation, I’ll know we built something that truly mattered.
My dream is to create a nonprofit that provides affordable veterinary care, supports spay and neuter programs, rescues animals in need, and gives them a safe place to heal until they find loving homes. AgaveLuz gives me an opportunity to work toward that dream one bottle at a time.
I’d also love to see consumers better understand how tequila is made and what makes one brand different from another. The more informed people are, the more they’ll appreciate the care that goes into producing tequila the right way.
More than anything, I hope AgaveLuz inspires other entrepreneurs to build businesses with purpose. You don’t have to choose between creating an exceptional product and making a positive difference. I believe the strongest businesses do both.
If twenty years from now someone picks up a bottle of AgaveLuz and says, “That’s the tequila that helps animals,” I’ll know we did something that mattered.
