Rising Stars: Meet Kindred

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kindred.

Hi Kindred, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a singer-songwriter/music producer from Montgomery County, Maryland. I moved to Los Angeles five years ago to pursue my career in music. Ever since I can remember, music was always something I wanted to do. I was always “singing” before I knew how to speak and I began to train in classical piano. My favorite class was choir from 4th grade all the way until 12th grade. We spent a lot of time competing in state and national choir competitions. It was then that I knew I wanted to be a solo performer so I branched out by doing solo auditions for agencies looking for young artists.

I attended Berklee College of Music for RnB and pop vocals right after I graduated high school and learned a lot about myself while working together with other creatives. I made so many amazing memories with the most talented people I have met but unfortunately was only able to attend for a short time. After taking a few years of giving myself time to grow, I began to really think about what I wanted to do with music. I took the next steps and decided to move to Los Angeles.

The creative scene in Los Angeles was a complete 180 for me compared to what I was learning on the east coast. I fell in love with this city immediately. I attended my first EDC 2015 and was absolutely captivated by the music and how it made me feel. From then on, I knew I wanted to create emotional music to make people feel so I began to network within the Los Angeles scene while trying to learn music production on my own.

In 2018, I attended IO Music Academy to learn the basics of music production and the music industry. To further my education, I went to ICON Collective in 2020. I learned so much about music production, music theory, how to collaborate with other students and had amazing mentors. ICON was probably the best decision I ever made which helped me become the artist I am now.

Before graduating in 2021, my first single “Shattered” came out in January and the music video came out shortly after. My first label release on Subsidia was then released in April and I was able to perform my music at Lost Lands in September! The journey as an artist has just started and I have so many projects I am working on right now.

Limelight Entertainment just took me on as a part of their team and they are a group who really believes in me and pushes me each day to do better with putting my all in music. I am so thankful for them!

Music was always there for me when no one wasn’t, it has always helped me through the toughest times. For every emotion: there is a perfect song out there for it. I try to make beautiful, emotional music that I hope will help someone someday and I love spending every day creating.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like there is no smooth path when it comes to working toward your end goal. There was a lot of struggle with me asking myself, “is this really for me” or “am I good enough.” There were times I was fighting with my own internal struggles of just growing and learning as a human. I have come so far and I know there are so many more struggles I need to face, but I am ready and excited for it all!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I write, sing, and make very emotionally-driven music. I tell everybody I make “sad girl” music. I’m known mostly for my lyrics that bring tears to listeners because I try to relate to the hurt people can feel and bring a voice to it. My delivery when singing is more emotional than most artists.

I’m most proud of my song “Blank Pages” with Cyrus Gold. It’s the most beautiful lyrics I have written so far and I think the balance of imagery, beauty, and drama in the lyrics are great.
