Today we’d like to introduce you to Violet Grae.
Violet, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from a small town in western Pennsylvania, population five thousand. I was deeply rooted in classical music and musical theatre in my youth as a singer, dancer, and actor. I studied voice at Carnegie Mellon University. I participated in numerous musicals, reviews, competitions, and showcases at the Center for the Performing Arts. I was also performing with bands and touring by the age of fifteen. After high school, I attended Pennsylvania State University and the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. I studied Music Business and Vocal performance. I fell in love with both sides of the music industry and that is where my story began. I started touring and recording music right after college and finally made Los Angeles my home. Along with being a front woman, I am an entrepreneur. I have been a fierce advocate for over 700 performers for over a decade. I am the founder of Violet Grae Studios, an artist boutique in Hollywood. I have also created BYOB pop up events throughout the southern California area. I wanted to create more opportunity for diverse artists to share their message and provide a safe space for listeners to be who they are.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a female pansexual artist and entrepreneur in today’s predominately male music industry has adversities and challenges. From my experience, I can profess that I usually have to work and prove myself three times over during sessions, performance, or business meetings. We have come a long way, but we desperately need more exposure and opportunity for female and LGBTQ writers, agents, managers, producers, and musicians. I will not stop fighting the patriarchy through my music to create more opportunity for women in music until the playing field is balanced. Although facing this uphill battle every day can be incredibly difficult, my listeners, clients, the LA music scene, and LGBTQ community overwhelm me with endless support. Every time I feel like I am weary, I am reminded daily why I do this and to keep moving forward.
Please tell us about the business.
Violet Grae Studios is a boutique that can address the creative needs of each individual artist from songwriting to performance. My mission addresses the detailed work of creating advocacy, networking, soliciting performance opportunities, cowriting, artist development, booking and preparing shoots, and refining recording sessions. I direct the artist throughout the detailed work within the recording studio. Every musician has specific goals and Violet Grae Studios cater to every client. I will help polish the vocal craft at any age and skill level. I can speak from experience as an independent artist, then a signed artist. Violet Grae Studios is based out of Hollywood’s premiere recording studios Brick by Brick. This makes recording readily accessible for each artist. In addition, the artist is able to work with the producers and writers that they desire. Whether working with budding artist or a seasoned musician, this is one of the most rewarding professions on the planet. I am not truly fulfilled with only my own artistry. My dream is to advise my songbirds and “grae babes” towards a clearer path while sharing my own experience, triumphs, and missteps.
I created BYOB Events with my partner, Lex Wolfe. BYOB is a pop-up event that originated in Los Angeles. We have both been working in the music industry for over fifteen years and are advocates for women in music and voices in the LGBTQ community. BYOB is an acronym for “Breaking Your Own Boundaries”. We also adapt creatively to each event; as examples Bring Your Own Boo, Bring Your Own Bitch, Bring Your Own Beat, Bring Your Own Babe, Bring Your Own Bass, Bring Your Own Best. Together we wanted to create a safe space at musical events for individuals of any sexual orientation or preference. All of the booked acts of BYOB are predominantly strong women in music and in our community.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would like to thank all of my clients or as I like to call them my “Songbirds”. Working with them and witnessing their growth and success in music, has brought me so much joy throughout the years. I am beyond happy to be with them every step of the way! My gratitude is deeply extended to Samantha Voss. My entertainment lawyer that believed in me as an artist and business woman. She has been an advocate through my management deal and is the reason Violet Grae Studios came into fruition this year. I would like to extend my gratitude to my partner Lex for working endlessly with me to create BYOB. She also has been a huge part of my performances. This year is going to be ground breaking. Cannot wait to share what we have planned. Eli Massillon for signing me to Brick by Brick last year. Thank you for believing in my voice and message. My beautiful family for always being my Italian rocks. Especially my mum for the countless 2 AM brainstorming sessions, bringing music into my life, all of the lessons, and always being there without judgement.
