Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhoiey Ramirez.
Jhoiey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Since moving to the US in 1998 from the Philippines, I’ve worked my way in different design firms and with my last employment with a major commercial developer, I’ve hit my glass ceiling. I had a choice whether I take in a more management/leadership position in another design firm and find and maintain clients for my employer or establish my own design studio and keep on doing what I love most and build my own repertoire of clients. Word spread fast that I went on my own and immediately started getting clients. From the humble beginnings of doing interior design for clients, we are now involved in doing multi-million dollar homes primarily in the Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills area where we are offering full service and turnkey design services to esteemed clients. Labeling ourselves as Lifestyle Designers is a testament that we believe that the built environment should revolve and be designed with respect to each individual’s specific lifestyle as opposed to following trends or getting inspired by photos on a magazine. In that vein, I spend as much time with my client as I could to get to know them and be able to translate way of life into well-designed spaces.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No road is without potholes. Starting any business takes guts and preparation. It’s a constant learning experience and some pitfalls are hard to recover from. I have been blessed with an amazing team of people who worked with me through the toughest of the last four years we’ve been in business. Our repeat business with clients have been the best method of marketing but every now and again, we still encounter clients who do not trust the design process enough after they get the bill. Thankfully, we always recover.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a Lifestyle Design Studio specializing in custom high-end residential projects. We are known for our efficiency, reliability and our custom design work. We are trendsetters and instead of having a style, each design has its own personality that mimics the fun and adventurous side of our clients. They walk the wild side with us. Our proudest moment so far was having our project described in Beverly Hills Lifestyle magazine — “the vibe has transformed from Sammy Davis ‘Crooner’ to a Lenny Kravitz ‘Rock Star'” especially because Lenny Kravitz is designing high-end homes now as well.
What sets us apart is our fearless nature when it comes to the scale and complexity of the project. The tighter the deadlines are, the extremity of design requests, we go for it. Also, the relationship we have built with our clients and the trust they give us. I never experience such rapport with clients when I was just an employee. Now that I run my own studio and feel empowered to build that trust, I am able to tap into that relationship which guides me through the design process.
What were you like growing up?
I am a happy-go-lucky-go-getter as a kid… and I know that sounds like such a contradiction but I am still like that now. I think maybe it’s because I have strict parents who expect me to be the best at everything I do and I rebelled so much against those expectations and then at the last minute, I make it happen cause I do not want to disappoint them but at the same time, I love having fun! I experiment a lot and try different things, dabbling in fashion, ceramics, sculpture, painting, photography and anything else creative that peaks my interest. I was even in a rock band for a while, that’s how diversely creative I was growing up.
