Meet Sabine Dodane of Rêves de Sabine in Ventura

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabine Dodane.

Sabine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
First and foremost, I am a nature lover and an idealist.

I was born and raised in Franche-Comté, a beautiful region of France, a landscape of lush countryside, dense forests, waterfalls, and rivers. I spent a great deal of my time outdoors, and knew at an early age that my relationship to nature was an important part of who I am.

Growing up, we shopped mostly local. We knew our local farmers and suppliers by name, we had our favorite cheese shop, bakery, butcher shop, tea shop, honey producer etc… What was fresh and in season was what inspired our menu. I was taught to look, touch and smell what I was buying… In other words, trust my senses to assess quality. And that is a skill that has been with me ever since.

Another place that had a profound influence on my path was Ibiza, an island off the coast of Spain, where I spent two months out of every year until I came to California at the age of twenty two. I can honestly say that the idea for “Rêves de Sabine” (Sabine’s Dreams”) was born during my teen years in Ibiza.

Ibiza was a beautiful, unspoiled place that encouraged a simpler way of life: our home was solar-powered and used exclusively rain water collected in a cistern. We lived in harmony with nature, off the grid for two months (we had no TV, no telephone…). It was the best mind, body and spirit break! And it truly inspired my idealistic heart. The health benefits of that lifestyle were obvious: when we left the island at the end of the summer, we looked and felt fantastic.

It was in Ibiza that I started creating health and beauty treatments from locally grown, all natural ingredients because they were so readily available, and I had so much time on my hands to pamper everyone! It made me happier than anything, and I had lots of friends eager to test my latest concoctions.

Both of my parents being artists, I was exposed to graphic designers, painters, sculptors, architects, and I ended up pursuing a career in branding and design. I was a package designer for most of my career, but I always yearned to shape what was INSIDE the package, not just what was on it. It was something that was always in the back of my head, nagging at me. Finally, in 2015, I set out to realize my dream and launched my own natural beauty line, Rêves de Sabine, fueled by the same inspiration I felt back in Ibiza.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wouldn’t trade being an entrepreneur for any other option, and I’m so grateful to be able to do what I truly love. However, it isn’t easy. I am in my element being creative, researching ingredients, formulating beautiful products for the skin, caring for my customers and coming up with new ideas. Being a business person requires more effort. Sometimes I wish I could wave a magic wand and bypass all the tedious parts of being a business owner. However, having to be pragmatic, organized, consistent and intentional about where I am taking my business is giving me a strength that I didn’t know I had. It is also grounding me.

When I started Rêves de Sabine, I had virtually no business training. I soon realized that if I wanted to make my dreams a reality, I needed to develop some new skills. I enrolled in a 14-week training program with WEV (Women’s Economic Ventures) here in Ventura, and it helped me create a business plan and map out my path to success. Through them, I also connected with a network of other female entrepreneurs, and they all give me courage, inspiration and moral support. I can honestly say that I couldn’t have done it without them!

Being a business owner is a process, not an event. I am learning every day and will never stop learning!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rêves de Sabine story. Tell us more about the business.
Rêves de Sabine (Sabine’s Dreams) is the French approach to enhancing beauty and well-being the natural way, with thoughtfully sourced natural and organic ingredients, as pure and close to their original form as possible, which means organic, cold pressed, unrefined, non-GMO, etc… And it includes the use of therapeutic essential oils to look, feel and smell beautiful, naturally, from head to toe.

The Rêves de Sabine line includes face and hair serums, body oils, balms, clay masks, sugar scrubs, and bath salts.

As a natural beauty line owner, I care about the environment, our carbon footprint, including the type of packaging that is used, because each decision impacts everyone. I try to minimize waste. Last summer we became Green-Certified by the City of Ventura. It is encouraging on so many levels and a reminder that every day, small changes add up to big results. I also care about customers, try to respond personally to their questions and be completely transparent. Trust is very important to me; it is something that is earned over time, not obtained spontaneously.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel fortunate to have been exposed to inspiring people and places that have fueled my dreams, and to have amazing friends and loved ones who support me unconditionally.

But passion, perseverance, courage, and openness to experience are what gave me the drive to come to California and ultimately start my own business…

I love the saying: “Leap and the net will appear.” There are many factors that are out of my control, but I believe that I increase my own luck by being aware when an opportunity arises, by not allowing fear to be paralyzing, and by taking action.
