Today we’d like to introduce you to Meike Legler.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I never planned to become an artist, it rather just happened naturally after we moved to LA from Berlin 2 years ago. I’ve been working in the fashion industry for years and just wasn’t happy with it anymore, so when we relocated I knew I would need to make some changes in my work life. I had all those fabrics I brought from Germany and for a few months I would just ignore them, yet I knew I wanted to make something with them eventually, I just didn’t have a clue what that would be.
And then, one day I had the idea to sew together pieces of different fabrics and stretch this composition over a canvas so it would look like a painting, only that it was made of fabric. I quite liked the result and felt I was onto something that I really enjoyed doing and the ideas just kept floating and floating so that at one point I started my own website, uploaded the photos of my works, set up an Instagram account and ever since I’ve been getting attention and sales. I’ve created a large body of works in different sizes, started adding acrylic paint to some of my pieces, and played with different styles, shapes, and colors.
Over the last 1,5 years, I’ve worked with hotels, interior designers, art advisors, and galleries, and I’ve been part of many group shows. It’s been a wonderful and rewarding time in my life that has only just begun and I’m very excited what the future will bring!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Knock on wood, so far it’s been quite a smooth road as I was able to live of my art from a very early point on. I would say that my struggles are the same that all artists have to deal with. Promising opportunities, that don’t come through in the end, finding an affordable studio, going through periods without any sales and thus no financial safety, and being a bit too much in my own head.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Meike Legler story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a textile artist making wall art out of fabrics that I source from different places such as flea markets, fabric stores, hardware and vintage stores, etc.
My works are abstract and don’t follow a specifc style. Some are very colorful and feature a wild pattern, some are minimalist, geometric, and subtle, and some others incorporate acrylic paint and hand stitched elements.
You can acquire them directly through me, art advisors, on artsy, and Saatchi.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
That’s hard to say, maybe I would rather call it “being at the right place at the right time”, like for example reaching out to an interior designer right in the moment where he is looking for an artwork for his client.
I also strongly believe in opening ourselves up for opportunities through meditation, expanding self worth, and letting go of energies and belief systems that no longer serve us.
And lastly, I believe in proactively persecuting your goals, hard work, and patience.
