Meet Marisa Vitali of Up Tight Productions in Silverlake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Vitali.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
While honing my acting skills in class, I was inspired by a teacher I was studying with who gave us a Call To Action. We ALL have a story to tell…So tell it!

I had always written my story, about how I started using heroin, in many different forms; from stream of consciousness, a play, a screenplay even as a short story but I always stopped at the same place. I was never able to see the ending…

After receiving the Call To Action, I woke up the next day and started to write. The story just flowed out of my pen, I couldn’t keep up….I couldn’t write fast enough. The story that was flowing was not about my active addiction, but about my first year clean in recovery. I realized THAT was the most difficult time for me. A time I had to face the truth of what my life had become without a drug to hide behind. I also found, that family and friends, didn’t want to talk about it and acted as if nothing had happened. There was an unspoken expectation that because I was not using everything was “FINE.”

I felt like a turtle without a shell, raw and emotionally exposed. This was the story I wanted to tell in the film Grace. Anyone can watch a film and learn how to shoot a bag of dope or smoke a crack pipe. I wanted to tell a story of hope and recovery and bridge a gap between addicts and non-addicts to start that conversation of recovery. There is something to be said about how we can all be a little more compassionate for one’s struggles to overcome against all odds.

If I can reach one person with this film, I feel my job of being of service is complete.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth?!? Is life smooth?!? There’s always something to be navigated, overcome, learned and then applied. I tend to see life the honing of the skill to be the Calm in the Eye of The Storm. And believe me there have been storms, from tornados, to typhoons, to rabbit holes and the complete abyss and yet, here I am. Those moments are just as important along the journey as are the sunrises, sunsets, rainbows puppy dogs and ice cream.

Making a movie is a ginormous feat of energy, collaboration, combustion and flow. It’s organized chaos at best, while you are hurtling through space a million miles an hour. I am a firm believer that the players who are meant to play are the players that show up for their call time first day of shooting. The movie gods align the best people to hop in the fox hole with you.

It’s a matter of preparation meeting opportunity to create a most memorable experience in the blueprint of your life, your audience’s life and to take it one step further to ripple out into the world.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Award Winning film GRACE is inspired by my first year clean from heroin addiction and starts a conversation of Recovery.

The Opioid Epidemic is HERE.

So many people are making money off the problem that no one is really talking and sharing the solution. The solution is Recovery. We do recover.

For GRACE to start this conversation of recovery and to bring addicts and non-addicts together lifting the stigma of addiction humbles me at best.

GRACE is currently screening at colleges, universities, recovery rallies and will be a part of the Lehigh County Jail for female inmates implementing a GRACE group.

Super excited to have the opportunities to share GRACE with a handful of superintendents via the IEI Educational Conference to discuss the potential of bringing the conversation of Recovery to Public High School Curriculum.

Step out of the shadows of the metal chairs in church basements and join us in the conversation of recovery.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
As a recent transplant from Brooklyn NY, it is inspiring to connect with all of the different sub-cultures that co-exist in LA. Certainly many rabbit holes to drop down…
