Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesley Bohm.
Lesley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As one of the first photographers to move full time to the downtown arts district years ago, I am proud to say that I have created a successful career as a female photographer in Los Angeles for over 20 years. I have weathered many entertainment industry issues, strikes and walkouts and the constant change of the photography business. (Film to digital just to name a big one) I have kept changing with the times and growing as an artist, a person and a photographer to stay up to date and to keep my name fresh in the industry.
I graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver BC, Canada and two weeks after graduating I packed up my car and drove to LA with less than $1000 in my pocket. Those first years were fun but a lot of work went into making a good impression and creating a great reputation. I am a people photographer I shoot celebrities, actors, publicity shots, headshots, author shots, entrepreneurs and high end portraits. My focus is to bring the best out of people, to bring life and beauty into the headshots and brand photos used in marketing, advertising and publishing, in the entertainment industry and in advertising. I have had my work published in many magazines, book covers and now online in many places such as business websites, online magazines and social media.
My journey wasn’t easy but I never looked back. What I love the most about shooting in Los Angeles is the light, I find it has a magical quality to it. Being that I like to shoot with natural light I found an incredible sunlight studio space in downtown LA 20 years ago where I still shoot at today and I love it. I call it Sunlight Studio. I get the best of both worlds as I have an amazing natural light studio space but I can also just walk outside and enjoy many different backgrounds around the new DTLA arts district. The new buildings lend a cool backdrop and vibe to new and creative images.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the struggles of making a name for yourself in Los Angeles is that to create a lasting business you have to make sure that your business relationships stay fresh. I have been in LA a long time and when I started to shoot there were only a handful of photographers working in the same field. To stay on top and to keep creating beautiful new work you have to work on your portfolio and images all the time. For me I put in the energy and money into reworking and rebranding my website and images every few years. It takes an ongoing creative effort and having an ongoing marketing plan but it is worth it.
As a female photographer I found that in the beginning there were just a few of us and it was a plus to be different in a male based industry. Now it is so great to see that there are many female photographers and it is great to see so many working in the biz. I feel that now, as always, to stand out your work has to be really great. You need to have your own vision and keep your craft and business moving forward in creativity and professionalism. I support women in this business both by mentorships and by renting my studio out to photographers on their way up. I like to encourage creativity and the arts.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with LESLEY BOHM PHOTOGRAPHY – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in making beautiful iconic portraits that show the true personality and the true self. I have been shooting people for many years and that has enabled me to create a system that makes people relax and feel comfortable in a very short time. When that happens then a space is created where my clients can bring forth their true selves to be seen and I get to capture a very special moment in time. It doesn’t matter if you are a celebrity or just a regular person, if you are in front of my lens I will see the beauty within and capture the moment in time. I also love to celebrate women in business. I have focused on creating beautiful and strong portraits that they can use in their life and business to elevate their personality and business in the public eye. We all respond to great photographs and if you have a great photograph of yourself that people can know, like and trust you in under 10 seconds when they see that photo then watch out world!! Also I love what I do and I am constantly trying to grow as an artist.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am so excited for the future. Never before has the photography business been so full of new and exciting options. I am busy shooting both in my studio and on location but I am always looking for new clients to work with.
Also as another layer to supporting other photographers I rent out my sunlight studio space so that I can share the beautiful light that I have enjoyed over the years and help new photographers who want to be in the area. DTLA is such an exciting place to be right now. Even though I have lived in the area for a long time, the new energy is just fantastic and of course there are so many new places to explore and use as great backdrops!
