Meet Jerod Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerod Williams.

Jerod, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a Legal Assistant by day and a Cardio Dance Fitness Instructor by night.

My journey began when one day during a routine checkup with my doctor and he basically told me that you could stand to lose a few pounds and incorporate some exercise in your life. It was definitely a major health scare for me. After my doctor’s appointment, I drove through Atwater Village in Glendale and my car broke down. I called AAA and they told me that it would take a little while for them to come to my rescue so in the meantime while waiting, I walked around and saw all of these people in this tiny studio (Heartbeat House) crammed in this space dancing, moving and smiling all the while having fun. They were basically getting their lives on that dance floor and two people were teaching this class. It definitely piqued my interest and I took a brochure and came back.

From there on, I did their work exchange so that I can do my classes on the regular and then got interested in getting certified to become a dance instructor.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges was definitely my weight and my stamina. In my mind, I was thinking that no one wants to take classes with a chunky instructor who gets winded all the time so I knew that I had to start getting in some sort of shape.

After I got certified to teach dance fitness classes, I waited a while before teaching and just worked on memorizing routines and kept doing them until I knew I could do a standard one-hour class.

In addition, when you are a new instructor, you really have to prove yourself right out the gate that you are good enough to teach so there’s that added pressure of impressing clientele as well as promoting yourself.

For a while, I wasn’t getting anyone in my classes. It takes time, promotion, determination and working on your craft. Staying humble when success comes and remaining strong throughout the disappointments.

One of the things that has truly helped me was to be able to bring a lot of myself into this fitness. That crazy, quirky side of me that likes to come out whenever I feel shy, especially when I have to speak to a group of people. There are times when I have to turn that switch on and be “Jerod – the Dance Teacher”.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is teaching cardio dance workout classes.

I teach three formats in and around Southern California. I teach U-Jam Fitness, Zumba and Flashback Funk. I teach at Heartbeat House Dance Studio in Atwater Village, Moore Dancing in Brentwood, Rock Star Dance Fitness in Burbank and 24-Hour Fitness in Compton and Downey.

What I am most proud of is being able to spread love and unity through dance and fitness all the while burning calories and having fun. I would like to think that what makes my classes special is that it’s taught from the heart. You will get 100% of me each and every time you enter on the dance floor or a group exercise room, my classes are tailored to just about anyone in any level and they can do their fitness at whatever level they prefer. My classes are a no judgment free zone and check your troubles and stress away at the door for the amount of time that you are in my class and “GET YO’ LIFE!”

I am most proud of the fact that I love connecting and meeting new people because you never know whose life you can touch and impact at that very moment.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I work hard to keep my classes fresh and keep learning new choreography. I’m always in my head thinking and creating. Even with the pre-designed choreography classes that I have, I am always finding different ways to present a routine and make it fun. It’s an amazing thing to see how each class is a different evolution when you keep things fresh.
