Meet Jason Scott of J. Michael Scott Interiors in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Scott.

Jason , let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I received my degree in Interior Design from the acclaimed Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Los Angeles in 1996. I attended FIDM on a full scholarship after coming in first place out of over 1,000 applicants by competing in their annual international design competition.

I am a professional and passionate designer, and I take pride in delivering that passion into every project within my practice…

For the past 20+ years, I have been involved in planning and designing interior settings for over 450 model home and private residences. I have operated as a design professional and thrived in fast paced design firms, managing multiple design projects from concept to completion. Those experiences gave me the opportunity to work with numerous styles and budgets, which led to many successful, award-winning projects.

It has always been my dream to eventually open up my own home furnishings store and continue to work on design projects as well. So, with my family and friends support and encouragement I decided to take a leap of faith, and in July of 2013, I opened J. Michael Scott Interiors.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe that owning your own business is never a smooth road. It requires hard work, long hours (almost non stop) as well as a strong emotional support system and passion for what you are doing. All that combined with a sense of reality on what you can and cannot actually do when owning a business, creates a good recipe for success…Well, at least for me so far it has.
I have definitely learned more about my self through this journey, learning what I am and am not capable of. Thus by allowing me to work on those shortcomings.

Michael Scott Interiors – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What we do best at J. Michael Scott Interiors, is that we are a one stop design store. We have the experience, connections and creativity to bring your interiors to life. I believe that style should not come at a high price…

GREAT DESIGN SHOULD BE AFFORDABLE!!

With our creative designs, eclectic array of furnishings and affordable prices, we strive to beautify the world one space at a time…starting with yours.

Before I had the store, I was designing clients homes and I was so frustrated with the retail choices out there for home furnishings. So when I opened the store, one of my goals was to have amazing home furnishings that were unique and exciting, things that could be purchased off the floor. I also wanted to be able to have customers come in and show me or describe something they were looking for and I would either find that exact thing or at least find them options. J. Michael Scott Interiors has access to over 400 manufacturers…so I can pretty much find anything for anyone. We also do in home design consultations, custom drapery/bedding/furniture as well as installations.

My husband and I also recently launched our own brand of candles: its called: ignite, by J. Michael Scott. We are very proud of the line because we strive to do our part to help the environment by creating and hand pouring our 100% soy candles locally, in our kitchen. Soy burns the cleanest of all candle wax and has a longer burn time. We also use recycled glass for the jars as well. We currently have over 16 custom amazing mixed scents in the line with more to come.

As incentive to our customers to do their part as well, we will give a $1 credit towards their next 6.5 oz. candle purchase, and a $2 credit towards their next 8.5 oz. candle purchase when they bring back in their empty ignite candle jars.

We will be selling these candles in store, and soon they will be available on Amazon Handmade.

What sets us apart from the competition is that I strive to be as honest and as helpful as I can with all of my clientelle. I want you all to feel very welcome when you walk in. Not only do we have a lot of great things on the sales floor, but since we have access to so many home furnishings manufacturers, I am also happy to search for what you want and email you options of items I can order for you. I try to work mainly with manufacturers that I know give out good product and are able to get product to me in a timely fashion. Whereas most of my competitors only offer what they have on the floor and the lead times to order are at least 8 weeks, I can usually place an order for a client and have it here as fast as a few business days. Even my custom made sofas, and other custom upholstered items only take about 3-4 weeks to make.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I would say I have a couple proud moments:
First being when I opened the store and watching my dream become a reality before my eyes…and keeping that dream alive.

The second would probably be all the interior design awards I have won along the way.
