Today we’d like to introduce you to Hana Brenner-Katz.
Hana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was homeschooled from K-12 which allowed me the freedom to really learn who I was, and I always gravitated towards entrepreneurship. At ten, I decided I wanted to start an online magazine for young girls, so I taught myself HTML and started to learn very basic graphic design. After I graduated high school, my plans were to become a special effects makeup artist, but it wasn’t for me, and after a few months in school, I became a real-life beauty school dropout. I ended up spending quite a few years working full-time in retail management but eventually rediscovered my love of graphic design and decided to go back to school.
After getting a degree in Graphic Design, I worked for Clique Media Group and HelloSociety (a New York Times Company), but in early 2018 I woke up one day and decided it was time to quit my job (which I did that day, much to the shock of everyone I knew) and start a freelancing graphic design business. At the time, my now-business-partner Cali Geyer was my roommate, and she was already doing freelance project management. We slowly started taking on social media clients together, realized how well we worked together, and In October 2018, we co-founded Cana Creative Agency. We are a full-service digital marketing agency with an emphasis on all things social media.
In addition to Cana Creative, I am also a digital collage artist. What started as a passion-project has now led to me taking on commissions and I have so much fun doing it.
Owning my own businesses is something that just feels RIGHT to me. I finally have the freedom I have always dreamed of, and at risk of sounding ultra cheesy, I really do wake up feeling grateful every single day to have a career that doesn’t feel like work. I truly love what I do.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not! I felt so lost after high school and for the years following. I’d thought I had known for YEARS what I wanted to be (a special effects makeup artist) and I was really surprised once I entered school how much I didn’t enjoy it. “Dropping out” at the time felt like a massive failure, but I now see that it set my life on the exact path it needed to be on. I am thankful for the years I spent working ridiculous hours in retail. I learned so much about how businesses work, met lifelong friends, and grew as a person. I honestly don’t think had I began studying graphic design straight out of high school that I would have taken college seriously. It’s wild to me that at 17 or 18, we are supposed to know the exact career we want to pursue. I have to wonder how many people are stuck in careers they hate because they thought they knew what they wanted to do as a teenager. It’s never too late to discover your real passion.

Cana Creative Agency is a full-service digital marketing agency with an emphasis on all things social media. Most of our clients utilize our social media management services, but content creation, brand strategy, experiential marketing – we do it all. We do tend to work mostly with clients in the Cannabis space, but we really have our hands in every vertical there is – travel, beauty, retail, dining, tech, etc. We eat, sleep and breathe creativity, and we make strive to make the process easy and affordable without sacrificing quality or effectiveness.
I believe what sets us apart is our human-touch. There is no copying and pasting between clients here. There is such a lack of compassion and warmth in the business world, and we aim to change that. No matter the size of a company, every single one of our clients gets specialized one-on-one attention.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’ve lived in LA my whole life (Santa Monica born and raised!) and I can’t see myself living anywhere else. I love the diversity and culture. I love that every 15-minutes you drive feels like you’ve entered an entirely new world. I love the opportunities for creativity. I love the beaches and the mountains.
I don’t like the rep that LA gets. I do think this city attracts a TON of the wrong people, but if you look hard enough, there are plenty wonderful humans here.
