Meet Ashley Mueller of Ash + OAK

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Mueller.

Ashley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At 29 I got my heart broken.

This led me to re-evaluate what brought me true joy in life and I remembered the happiness I felt working with flowers at 18.

I immediately reached out to my favorite Bay Area floral studio and was accepted for an internship. It wasn’t glamorous – but I got a taste of what this life would be like. I got my first paying gig as the in-house florist at a specialty market and was hooked.

Three months later I booked my first wedding at The SmogShoppe in downtown LA and have had my own business ever since.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My years spent at fashion school taught me the fundamentals of design, but left me clueless about the mechanics of running my own business. I struggled with pricing enough to maintain a lifestyle in the Bay Area.

At the outset of my business I worked from my tiny apartment, delivered full weddings worth of arrangements in a tiny car with usually just a few friends I’d bribe to help me.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ash + OAK – what should we know?
I have been a floral designer for the past 4 years.

Today we travel all over the world designing florals for weddings, styled photo shoots, and events ranging from influencer focused to corporate dinners.

Our approach to floral design is to create unexpected, moody, mischievous and romantic pieces.

We pride ourselves on creating arrangements that are organic to the season and setting that we are commissioned for.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Many years as a bartender has taught me how to listen, absorb and ask thoughtful questions in order to help clients realize their vision.

Being a florist also means being extremely resourceful – from turning a bucket into a step ladder or salvaging a broken vase.
