Meet Annette Parry of Red Rose Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annette Parry.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in the north of England, Manchester. Where I really mastered my skills of ‘play’. I was outdoors at every opportunity, playing with my neighborhood friends. Either building shelters, catching frogs, playing tag or our beloved football (soccer). The world was my oyster and I reveled in it, only going home because I was hungry!

My 3 goals in life were: 1. to be a PE Teacher 2. to play sports, all the time and 3. to travel the world.
Well I wasn’t a fan of school as I was bullied and my grades were pretty average, so going on for more education as a teacher didn’t appeal to me. So, I joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service. Where I played lots of sports and traveled the world… so, 2 out of 3 wasn’t bad I thought. I got made redundant after 14 years service, I was offered other positions but I knew it was time to start a new adventure. Sports and travel check, check.

I got a job as a sports programmer, in the local Plymouth City Recreation team. It was the first time, I had come across children… (I was in the Navy for 14 years)!!! I enjoyed their spontaneity and out of the box thinking. Plus, I felt I was one of them, just playing again. I moved onto a bigger job as a Sports Development Officer, in a newly appointed local ‘Sports College’. I loved it, I was able to develop movement and games programs in local schools. Educating primary school teachers how to play and offer a bag of tools.

In 1997, I had an opportunity to travel to California and enjoy a beautiful summer of endless fun… I didn’t want to go home!!! By the summer of 1998, I was fully committed to making it work in California. So, I handed my notice, sold my house and car and off I set. It felt like I had arrived home when the plane came down in LAX. I started my own soccer business, soccer2day, and it thrived anything soccer related I did. Playing, coaching HS varsity, club and lots of camps. When a neighbor said her daughter’s school was looking for a PE teacher and I should check it out. No, I thought, I love life as it is, my own hours and lots of playtimes. It took me a year to check it out. The Waldorf School of Orange County.

I started teaching games and movement there for 9 years. Developing their PE program, after-school sports and Summer Camps. I loved the kids, they wanted to learn and were open to a funny way of thinking. I moved to 2 other Waldorf Schools and after 18 years as a PE Teacher… check! Never give up on your dreams or goals.

I now take my next adventure as Red Rose Co. The Red Rose is from my English roots, the Lancashire Rose.
So, whilst gather all my life skills, and implementing kids camps for many years. I offer a very special take on kids camps. Coming from a teachers background, a coaches background, a military background, and an elite athletes background. I bring in the element of PLAY. I am not here to entertain a child, I am more than happy to walk with them on their journey and offer tools for them to choose. Therefore, I run my camps ‘family style’. Where everyone helps take care of one another. In this way, we help to guide and nurture the child’s social, emotional and physical skills while they move, play and become more comfortable in their bodies. I want to be a part of the parent’s team and help them understand and guide their child on this journey. I am a ‘Play Specialist’. My realms of expertise are the social, emotional and physical.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If it was a smooth ride I guess I would have lost the plot… the journey has been building and gathering for Red Rose Co. Rooting for the underdogs and guiding the miss understood. I have enjoyed the struggles because I had to look deeper into why was I advocating this kind of work, knowing it is so important for the children and youth of today.

Please tell us about Red Rose Co.
Red Rose Co. offers programs that support the whole family, creating a wholesome, nurturing, safe environment that allows children of all ages to challenge themselves, be engaged with their peers and grow. Parents can rest reassured knowing their child is safe at a fun and creative camp with trained, experienced, and caring staff.

Daily activities range from archery, crafting, hiking, shelter building, organized group games, scootering, sports, and time to rest in the shade! Whether you have an older child looking for a physical challenge, or a little one looking for a creative, nurturing environment.

The Importance of PLAY… “un-structured, age-appropriate risk-taking” kind of play. So, after 18 years of teaching in Los Angeles and Orange County, Red Rose Co. was born. (originally co-founded with my wife Kimberly Raine, who now continues to be a full-time Teacher:-)). We have had the great opportunity to work with A LOT of pretty amazing families over the years, who taught us quite a bit as well. At Red Rose Co., we understand the importance of the parent’s role in the child’s life, so we wish to support the family as a whole. While teaching was and still is our first love, our desire is now to inspire and empower more children to enjoy the great benefits of movement and play.

The importance of play in the modern child’s life has been greatly diminished in the past few decades. We’re not speaking about sports, which are important, we’re talking about good old-fashioned PLAY, like tree climbing, rolling down grassy hills, scootering around in the neighborhood with friends and all the variations of tag.

When a child plays freely and with unencumbered movement, they are using cross lateral movements which develop brain mapping. A child playing freely is using balance naturally, which stimulates the proprioceptive sensors in the body.

At Red Rose Co. we wish to create a space for children and families to be able to breathe and enjoy the rhythms of the universe. Through education, we want to foster human connection through nature, playfulness, and adventures. We wish to instill confidence, respect, honor, honesty, and integrity in all who visit or work with us. By creating a space for like-minded people, we hope to make this world a better place, one child and one adventure at a time.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Oh playing on the fields with my friends, feeling the grass under my feet and the brook flowing between my toes whilst I catch frogs. Being a kid!!!
