Life & Work with Mike Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Thompson.

Hi Mike, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I love creating things. Composers like Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, and Igor Stravinsky are some of my biggest influences to date. Through my journey as a contemporary jazz composer, I found myself drawn to the world of music production, particularly the production of “popular” music. Quincy Jones’ production in the 70s and 80s and Max Martin’s production in the 90s and 2000s have each shaped the language and aesthetic of pop music in a profound way. Jones’ background as a jazz composer and Martin’s as a classical musician gave them a unique perspective on pop music production, and that’s something that I hope to bring to the table in my own work—both as a writer and as a producer.

In 2019, I started Hexproof Productions with my business and creative partner, Sam Nickson. Together we provide a plethora of experiences and unique musical backgrounds to help an artist realize the true potential of their music. Not only in the writing and/or production but also in mixing and mastering, distribution, promotion, and long-time support from Hexproof. Since working with and streamlining Hexproof, I have spent quite a bit of my time writing music for Orchestras, Big Bands, Large Ensembles, and various other concert music ensembles. It is funny how things do come full circle!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It certainly has not been a smooth road, but I’ve been more fortunate than many. In 2021, my business and creative partner decided to leave the company, leaving me with quite a lot to handle and make the most of! Though Hexproof continues to rise through the ranks and make great music with great people!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I take tremendous pride in being a musician. While I am known for being a composer, arranger, producer, conductor, orchestrator, and teacher, I am a musician and part of the vast community of those who make music.

I write music for Big Band, Pops Orchestra, and small ensembles, and I write and produce music for up-and-coming artists all over the country. If I had to put a finger on it, people know me for my connection to music. Not only my ability to handle the music for large ensembles, but more specifically my connection to the music as a whole, and finding its true purpose and supporting that.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can support me by supporting my artists and supporting the music that I release. But Anyone can work with me, as long as they have a passion for music! I’ve found some of my most fulfilling collaborations with other songwriters, helping them achieve their vision and producing their music, and often assisting them in performing that music with a Big Band or Orchestra, which is often unimaginable or untenable for most.
