Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandie Brice.
Mandie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While teaching middle school in Milwaukee’s inner city, I was modeling on the side – signed with Ford’s lifestyle division in Chicago. After a while, I decided I wasn’t getting younger, but still loved the industry and “playing dress up” as I called it, so I wanted to stick around! Since I had done makeup for my own shoots, as well as sometimes on other models, I decided to put together a makeup portfolio, and did both modeling and makeup artistry on evenings and weekends while teaching, as well as in the Summer when I had off! After a while, I ended up retiring as a teacher to pursue “playing dress up” full time. As a full-time model, being fit was more important, so I started P90X, which led to me becoming a Beachbody coach. Beachbody introduced me to the world of personal development, which became a huge passion for me! Now, I am primarily a makeup artist, but am building an additional career in personal development through my podcast, online courses, as well as a book I’m finishing, and eventually a speaking career!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road! Like with anything, there are great days and horrible days. Clients come and go, and sometimes you have to really stay “on” someone to get paid, which can be months after the work has been done. My advice to young women starting their journey is to never stop learning, whether it is about your specific craft/area of expertise, or about the business aspect of being an entrepreneur. Every single person you meet can teach you something, even if it is through a negative experience. Don’t give up!
Please tell us about Makeup By Mandie Brice.
As a makeup artist, I specialize in natural beauty looks. I love helping people look their best, but still like them. Dramatic transformations are really fun, but I think the internal transformation of confidence built when people look their best is even more powerful. That’s why in addition to my makeup work, I made an online makeup academy for people to learn how to do their own makeup, whether it’s a 5-minute quick look, make up for being photographed or a date night look.
I am really proud of the integrity and professionalism I offer, as well as the “whole person” approach. I try to educate through my blog and social media pages on how to be beautiful from the inside out, and how you can “look better, feel better, and be better.” This includes fitness, nutrition, mindset, as well as makeup. When I work on a client, no matter who they are, I feel that it isn’t solely important to make them look good, but also to help them mentally prepare for their photo shoot, speech or tv appearance, because confidence and a genuine smile are two of the best parts of any beauty regimen!
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
This seems like a good time to plug my own podcast, right? It’s called “Bold Moves,” and it’s available everywhere you find podcasts! Additionally, I love Firestarter Sessions and Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte, because they help people get truly clear on what they want to do with their lives. Being in service for so long in helping people become fitter and healthier, in addition to doing something that is often so fun I’m tempted to do it for free has made my money mindset a bit challenging – I sometimes feel guilty charging what I’m worth, and ended up with almost an aversion to money! I am currently working on rectifying that, and two books that have been instrumental have been “Get Rich Lucky Bitch” by Denise Duffield-Thomas, and “You Are A Badass At Making Money” by Jin Sincero. I ask all of my podcast guests to recommend books, so that’s a great place to see what works for others! As for podcasts I love, I would check out The Chalene Show and Build Your Tribe by Chalene Johnson, School of Greatness, and Tim Ferriss’ show!
If you’re someone who wants to be confident at doing your own makeup so that you feel great when you go to work, school, or elsewhere (and studies show that women who wear makeup perform better on academic tests AND earn a higher salary by $4000-6000 per year than those who don’t), then I recommend my online makeup academy!
And if you stay tuned, I have a book on happiness coming out soon, as well as a goal setting and achievement planner and system, and branding/online presence courses – because I believe that everyone should follow their dreams, and my goal is to inspire and inform people on how!
