Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Estrada.
Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I knew I wanted to be an artist from a very young age. As a child, I would tinker and build things, always using my hands to create objects and sculptures. In my undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia, I delved into a multitude of art forms from ceramics to performance art, before finding my niche in the jewelry and metalsmithing world. My passion as a maker brought me from one coast to another to pursue a career as a jewelry designer in Los Angeles.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been an easy road, but I welcome every challenge because I know it will only make me stronger and better at my craft. I did not come from a privileged home and had to work diligently to put myself through school and achieve the education I knew I wanted. My advice is to do what you love – even if it is not the easiest path to take, it will be the most fulfilling.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Laura Estrada Jewelry – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I create all of my jewelry by hand using traditional metalsmithing techniques and with the intent to forge a lasting and meaningful connection with the wearer. I recently released my first official collection, Felipe, named after my late father, a line designed to empower and provide a sense of strength and resilience through the elemental shapes and forms. I also specialize in creating custom pieces, from engagement jewelry to conceptual metal art.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
My advice would be to surround yourself with a group of like-minded peers, seek out other creative and entrepreneurial individuals to connect with, especially other women. Create a network of connections and resources to grow with as you emerge into your professional field.
