Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Adams.
Alicia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m originally from Los Angeles but I moved to Minneapolis when I was 14 (biggest culture shock of my life). After high school, I joined the Air Force and lived a few different places, including South Korea. I quickly realized that the military had a lot of rules and I’m a bit of a rule breaker so I got out before my enlistment actually ended and went to college. Upon graduating, I moved to New York for two years where I became a licensed real estate agent. After being in New York for a year, I realized that I missed the west coast so I became a flight attendant and relocated back to Los Angeles. I’ve always been known as a problem solver, often finding creative solutions for problems. While having dinner with a girlfriend of mine, I made the comment that the environment we were in would be the perfect time to meet a potential partner, but I didn’t want to get “hit on” with a cheesy pickup line. I wanted more of a curated experience where I could select the guys that I would be interested in and that’s where the idea for Oui, Meet was born.
Oui, Meet is unlike any dating app currently on the market. Its two main components are the real-time meet-up/mini-speed date, where you can check into your current location via the app and search the profiles of users close by. Once you see a profile that catches your eye, you can send them a real-time date request. The second main component is the virtual speed dating. If you’re not much of an out person, or maybe you live in a city that’s still closed, you can log into the app every hour on the hour and have speed dates with other users who meet your dating criteria. If you mutually “like” each other after the speed date, you’ll be connected via the dating inbox. The whole concept is to get people to stop swiping and start dating.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has been a learning experience because I know nothing at all about tech/coding and start-ups, but it’s been relatively smooth–mostly because my head engineer Koffa has been amazing. She’s helped me at every step of the way outside of the coding. I’ve learned more about trademarks, patents and investors from her than I ever imagined. Big Black Girl Magic energy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been in real estate/property management for about ten years total. I love helping people make one of the most important decisions of their lives and that shows in my work. I’m known for having effective solutions and providing excellent customer service which I think comes because I truly enjoy being part of such a major life decision.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
YES! Covid made me realize that A. Not everyone enjoys going out but they still want companionship and B. When my mom used to tell me that outside wasn’t going anywhere–she was wrong, lol! Before Covid-19, the virtual speed dating portion of the app didn’t exist; but once the world shut down, I had to figure out how to make it worthwhile and valuable even when outside was closed.
- Free to download and use but a paid subscription does offer perks like searching further away from your current location (think pre-gaming. If you’re going to Vegas you can see who’s at Aria before you arrive, you just can’t send a date request until you’re in a 10 mile radius of the person you’re requesting) and more than 3 rounds of virtual speed dating.
