Today we’d like to introduce you to Tauran Woo.
Tauran, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve had a great love of creative endeavors my whole life. When I was in grade school and high school, I remember my big dream was to be a comic book artist. I had a change of heart in college, and studies graphic design, and also went to art school to continue that journey. However, I do sometimes wonder what would have happened if I had stayed on that path! After art school, I worked as a graphic designer for many years, and eventually ended up in an unrelated field – television! I ended up working on a show for E! Entertainment Television for many years and learned the ropes of television production via a top-rated show on basic cable! After working at E! for five years, I knew my time was up there, and I needed to pursue something that fulfilled a certain creative desire that had gone ignored for many years.
I had been already moonlighting in the wedding industry as a wedding videographer, but my secret ambition was to become a wedding photographer! I found a great mentor who was willing to give me the tools I needed, and I launched my business back in 2006 and have not looked back since. I’ve asked myself what trajectory my career would have taken if I had discovered photography earlier on in my life; however, I am satisfied that my other life experiences were invaluable, I’m excited for the future and the potential for creativity in this amazing and fun field!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’ve had the great pleasure of documenting hundreds and hundreds of weddings all over the Continental US, Hawaii, South America, Europe, and Asia! I’ll go wherever I’m asked, and I love presenting my clients with beautiful imagery that documents their wedding day. My goal is to capture real moments, beautiful portraits, family photos, breathtaking and romantic compositions – once-in-a-lifetime imagery! There are few events in your life more worth documenting than your wedding – I pour my creative soul into giving each couple a unique and beautiful vision of their event, big or small. Wedding photography is more than a few snapshots; it’s creating a family’s first heirloom and something that will be worth passing down through several generations.
In some cases, your photos will be the only evidence that you ever roamed this planet and the only tangible way that your descendants will be able to take a glimpse into your life. I think the responsibility and privilege of shooting a wedding is a worthy pursuit that is one of the most profound and special things you could be asked to do.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Yes, choosing a creative path in life has its share of difficulties, and in the beginning, we often aren’t always the best equipped to make business decisions to make a viable income. However, there are tons of resources now that are only a click away, and I challenge any creatives who feel like they have a complete lack of knowledge in business to begin learning some basic principles that are going to make your creative business flourish! Until we as artists start getting paid what we’re worth and are able to earn and save some money, the dream of living a happy and fulfilled, life will be shared with fear and the desperation of making ends meet. I want to see every artist create to their full potential and make a respectable living from it!
