Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Palencia.
Sonya, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My story began in the little town of Grand Terrace, CA. I was raised by affectionate parents on fertile land that provided us with such delicious memories. I often recall the fragrance of our orange groves, the smell of my first watercolor set, and learning the cycles of vitality and despair through nature and pet loss. I was an observant loner throughout grade school, worming my way through books, time traveling through music, antique hunting, and always sketching the peculiar. After graduation I headed to Pasadena, CA to attend the Art Center College of Design. I graduated with distinction in film/illustration and met many incredible teachers, talented artists… some of which have become family to me. I worked several years with such extraordinary imaginations in the film industry. It was an experience that ingrained the value of dependability, team work, and swift creative problem solving. Eventually the exuberant waltz of Los Angeles left me dizzy and I decided to embrace fine art and the still wilderness north of the city. I’m currently living with my husband, artist Jeff Nentrup, on a ranch in the middle of the Los Padres National Forest.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create oil paintings, graphite drawings, and wood carvings. They celebrate lore, old world aesthetics, and the life and death of all species. Take what you want. I can’t tell you how to feel about it.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Social media makes it ridiculously effortless these days to connect with artists. There are also opportunities in schools, workshops, and by attending art shows and performance events. Don’t be intimidated to travel in the name of art and research! Oh, and a little bit of etiquette and genuineness go a long way.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I’m currently participating in a delightful animal driven art show titled “Instinct” at the Burgundy Room Gallery in Hollywood (a portion of the proceeds benefit the Mercy for Animals organization). I’ll also be joining the Beinart Gallery’s Small Works show! Opening June 1st, 2019, in Melbourne, Australia.
You can view my work on my official website and through social media. Please feel free to visit my news page (on my website) for upcoming shows and events.
