Today we’d like to introduce you to Mae Brunken.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After receiving a BFA degree in Interior Design and working as a designer on a hotel project and several related residential projects, I took an opportunity to work in the film industry as a set decorator. I also continued to take on interior projects and eventually went back to working as an interior designer full time.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have been fortunate to always have clients, but it took some time to get to a place where I was able to determine that not every potential client is a good fit. When you have a small business, you want to make each project the best possible experience for everyone involved, including yourself.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My company specializes in Interior Design for high end residential and boutique hospitality projects, spanning from complete renovations to furnishings and accessories. I am known for classic design that incorporates the unexpected.
My experience as a set decorator allows me to look at the client in the same way as that I would look at a character who inhabits a set. I consider what that character would have in their space to best tell their story and fit their lifestyle, while also taking the architecture into account. This process allows me to be able to create different styles of interiors, which sets me apart from a lot of other designers.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
I love the diversity and creative spirit in Los Angeles.
The current homeless situation in our city makes me sad, because I’m aware of how important a person’s environment is to leading a healthy and productive life.
