Conversations with Erin Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Miller.

Hi Erin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Story of The Foundry
Mastering the Narrative: From Vision to Reality
The story of The Foundry begins with a fundamental belief: that every author possesses a unique voice that deserves to be forged into a masterpiece. Founded on the principle of “Mastering Your Story,” the business was established to guide writers through the arduous but rewarding journey from a mere idea to a polished, published work.
The Initial Forging
In late 2024, Erin Miller and Alexander Wankier formalized a partnership that would serve as the bedrock of the company. Erin took the lead on business development, client acquisition, and mentoring, while Alex brought expertise in backend management, and editing. Together, they envisioned a “ground floor” enterprise that offered something rare in the industry: a cohesive, human-first team capable of handling every aspect of an author’s platform.

Unlike many competitors who rely on automated AI tools or “scammy” low-cost shortcuts, The Foundry was built on the value of real human interaction and high-level talent. This commitment to quality was reflected in their early branding, which adopted a theme of metalworking, fantasy, and steampunk—elements that symbolize the heat and pressure required to craft something enduring.
Building the Elemental Team
As the vision grew, so did the team. The Foundry assembled a collective of specialists to provide what they termed the “Four Elements” of author services:

Mentorship and Well-being: Recognizing that creativity is tied to mental and emotional health, Erin developed a program that addresses the whole person, helping authors overcome internal blocks.
Developmental Storytelling: Experts like Diana Courtney-Smith and Theresa B joined to offer deep dives into character archetypes and narrative structure.
Design and Digital Presence: Kayla Kempers was brought on in 2025 to manage web design and social media, ensuring that an author’s digital “home” was as professional as their manuscript.
Derek Gruen also joined the team as our talented graphic artist, creating custom book covers and visual assets that bring our authors’ stories to life.
Marketing and Strategy: The team expanded to include ad management and specialized visibility packages through strategic partnerships.
A Holistic Philosophy
What truly sets The Foundry apart is its holistic approach. In 2025, the team refined their mission to emphasize that mental, emotional, and physical well-being are essential for reaching creative goals. They moved away from rigid, confusing service packages toward a more intuitive, personal experience that allows authors to choose exactly what they need—whether it’s a simple developmental edit or a full-scale bestseller launch.
The Future of the Craft
By 2026, The Foundry had expanded its reach through a partnership with Authors Unite, integrating powerful visibility and authority-building tiers into their offerings. Despite this growth, the core remains the same: a dedicated team of mentors and editors who act as a lifelong sounding board for independent authors.

From its beginnings in Julian, California, to its current status as a comprehensive author development hub, The Foundry continues to forge a path for writers to reclaim their voices and share their stories with the world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Developing The Foundry has involved navigating several operational, strategic, and personal challenges. Based on the documentation and team communications, here is a summary of those hurdles:Operational and Technical Challenges
Website and Onboarding Friction: A significant portion of the team’s effort has been dedicated to streamlining the user experience. This included initial struggles with mobile optimization, form alignment, and confusion regarding how clients book services.

Streamlining Processes: The team faced difficulties with redundant steps in the booking process and ensuring that service packages were clear and intuitive for authors. Transitions to new platforms, such as HoneyBook, required ongoing adjustments to ensure forms and payment processes were properly integrated.
Access Issues: In the early stages, the founders encountered technical barriers just accessing the backend of their own website, which required resolution with their external marketing partners.

Business and Strategic Hurdles

Defining Service Packages:
There was a noted tension in effectively communicating the business model, as service descriptions and packages were not always aligned. Clients occasionally felt forced to purchase bundled services they did not need, leading to the need for a comprehensive rework of the website copy and service flow to make it more intuitive.
Navigating Industry “Noise”: A recurring struggle has been differentiating The Foundry from competitors, particularly those using “scammy” or purely AI-driven shortcuts. The team has had to actively work to prove the value of “human-first” talent and high-level mentorship in a market flooded with low-quality, automated offers.
External “Noise”: Dealing with external entities, such as predatory “leeches” on social media platforms, has been an ongoing frustration that requires consistent vigilance and boundary-setting.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I actually do:

On paper, I handle business development and client acquisition. But in reality? I’m the anchor. I specialize in a human-first approach to mentorship. My job is to hold space for the person behind the manuscript. When authors get tangled up in their own fear, imposter syndrome, or creative blocks, I help them get rooted again. We aren’t just editing words; we’re working through the mental and emotional architecture of the story.

What sets me apart:

The industry is loud right now, full of “get-published-quick” schemes and AI shortcuts that promise the moon but deliver nothing. I completely reject that. What I offer isn’t a rigid, cookie-cutter package—it’s a partnership. I’ve learned that creative success isn’t just about mechanics; it’s about your internal well-being. If you aren’t right, the writing won’t be either. I meet you where you are, not where some algorithm says you should be.

What I’m known for & proud of:

I’m known for staying steady. To be the rock for our authors—especially when they’re spiraling or hitting their own walls—I’ve had to master my own resilience. I’ve navigated my fair share of burnout and “ungrounded” moments, and I think that’s actually my biggest asset. It allows me to look an author in the eye and say, “I’ve been there, and you’re going to be okay.”

I’m most proud of the team we’ve built. It’s a group of people who genuinely care about the craft, not just the transaction. We’ve become a lifelong sounding board for independent writers, and knowing that we help them reclaim their voice—truly reclaim it—is the only reason I do this.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
