Check Out Damian Fulton’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damian Fulton.

Damian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I know it’s overused, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that I am a multihyphinate artist in the true sense of the word: Fine Artist, Film Director, and Comic Creator.

Fine Artist: Damian Fulton
Damian Fulton’s paintings capture the wild, kinetic soul of Southern California — where surf, city, and dream collide. Known for his bold color, cinematic storytelling, and painterly skill, Fulton’s work fuses pop surrealism with a deeply personal connection to Los Angeles life. Often described as “the Quentin Tarantino of Surf Art,” his paintings explore beauty, chaos, and humor in equal measure, celebrating the tension between paradise and apocalypse that defines coastal culture. His work has been featured in museums, galleries, and public installations throughout California, earning him a loyal following among collectors and fans alike.

Film Director: Damian X Fulton
As a filmmaker, Damian brings his visual storytelling to life through character-driven, heartfelt narratives. His latest film, “The Great Christmas Snow In,” starring Joey Lawrence, is currently streaming and showcases his signature blend of warmth, humor, and emotional depth. Whether directing on set or developing new projects that merge faith, redemption, and community, Fulton continues to expand his creative reach — combining his painter’s eye with a director’s sense of story and heart.

Comic Creator: Radical Rick
Fulton first made his mark in the pages of BMX Plus! magazine with the creation of Radical Rick, the fearless, funny BMX hero who became a pop-culture icon for an entire generation of riders. Decades later, Radical Rick remains a cult favorite, with a thriving online presence and a robust e-commerce business offering collectibles, limited-edition art, and apparel. Fulton’s ability to keep the character fresh and relevant — while honoring its nostalgic roots — speaks to his rare mix of imagination, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial drive.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. But it’s my own fault. Seems I’ve always been drawn to so many creative disciplines — painting, filmmaking, comics — and that passion for multiple outlets has made it challenging to give any one area 100%. I’m a curious artist by nature, and sometimes that curiosity can scatter your energy as much as it fuels it!

On a personal level, raising a family in Los Angeles has its own set of challenges. It’s a wonderfully wild, vibrant place for creativity, but it’s also an expensive, fast-paced city that demands a lot from you. Balancing family life, professional career, artistic goals, and the realities of LA traffic, deadlines, and living costs hasn’t always been easy. But somehow, through a mix of persistence, humor, and faith, we managed to keep it all rolling — and I think that balance between chaos and creativity shows up in my work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I suppose at my core, I’d like to believe I’m a visual storyteller. My work bridges fine art, film, and comics — hopefully all grounded in bold imagery and human emotion. Whether I’m painting a surf apocalypse, directing a heartfelt Christmas movie, or drawing my BMX hero Radical Rick, everything I do is about capturing life’s energy, humor, and chaos with as much honesty and style as I can muster.

As a fine artist, I’m known for paintings that mix surf culture, urban life, and pop surrealism into vivid, cinematic scenes. People often describe my art as “beautifully chaotic” — colorful, story-driven, and unmistakably Southern California. As a filmmaker, I’m drawn to heartfelt stories that explore faith, family, and redemption. And as the creator of Radical Rick, I’ve had the rare privilege of seeing a character I dreamed up as a young artist still resonate with fans decades later — now through art, collectibles, and an entire e-commerce brand.

What I’m most proud of is that I’ve built a creative life entirely on my own terms. I’ve worn many hats — painter, director, comic creator, dad — and somehow it all connects. What sets me apart is that crazy blend of imagination, craftsmanship, and persistence. Seems I’m not happy unless I’m building worlds that reflect how wild, funny, and fragile life really is.

What are your plans for the future?
This past year was an incredible ride. I wrapped up the Radical Rick 45th Radiversary Tour, traveling across the country as a special guest at old-school BMX races and events, meeting fans who grew up with the character and sharing the stories behind the art. It was both nostalgic and inspiring to see how much Radical Rick still means to people after all these years.

As 2025 winds down, I’m curating a special art drop of original Radical Rick artwork, a celebration of the character’s legacy and the community that’s kept the spirit alive. Looking ahead, I’m shifting gears to focus on something new, deeply personal, and way overdue — I’m finally launching my online fine art print service, which will offer high-end, gallery-quality prints of both classic and new paintings. It’s a way to make my fine art more accessible while keeping the craftsmanship and quality at a collector’s level.

In 2026, I plan to take a sabbatical from Radical Rick to be more intentional about my painting — exploring bigger canvases, bolder narratives, and new creative directions. Alongside that, I’ll continue developing film projects that merge my love of storytelling, faith, and visual world-building. It feels like the next chapter will be about refinement and focus — doing fewer things, but doing them at the highest level possible. Let’s go!
