Life & Work with Darlene Darma of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darlene Darma

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Of course! I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, and growing up, I got to experience life in several different countries, including Singapore and Vietnam. All that moving around exposed me to a variety of cultures, which was really eye-opening.

Change was pretty much a constant in my life, with frequent moves and new schools. But through all that, my love for movies stayed solid. They were my go-to comfort during uncertain times, and I loved how familiar plots and endings gave me a sense of security. So at 16, driven by that passion and a love for film studies, I took a leap and moved to the U.S. on my own.

Landing in Los Angeles, I jumped right into the film scene. Being around so many ambitious and inspiring people really pushed me, and I found myself more motivated than ever. The energy, creativity, and challenge of making something beautiful totally captivated me.

Since then, I’ve been working as a film producer, and I’ve loved every minute of it, even with all the challenges.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth roads? Not quite. Like any journey, there were definitely some bumps along the way. Adapting to new environments and navigating cultural differences was challenging.

Moving to the U.S. at a young age, away from family and everything familiar, was a big adjustment. The hardest part was missing my family, especially during those teenage years. Being away from them during such a formative time while dealing with the usual struggles of adolescence was tough. But as hard as it was, it really highlighted how important family is to me.

On top of that, breaking into the competitive film industry had its own set of hurdles. But every challenge taught me something valuable, and they’ve all played a role in shaping who I am today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work as a film producer, handling everything from pre-production planning to post-production editing. I focus on keeping projects organized and making sure they come together smoothly, from start to finish.

What I really enjoy about my work is the process of bringing the director’s vision to life. It’s important to me to stay positive and work hard, especially when things get challenging. I do my best to approach each project with a strong sense of commitment and a focus on getting the details right.

One project I’m particularly proud of is “Ojue,” directed by Fernando Broce. It was my first time working on a film in another country – Panama, and the experience was both challenging and rewarding. Despite the language barrier, collaborating with the team there was a lot of fun. It became more than just a film project; it turned into a life experience that I really cherished. Seeing the final product and the way it connected with audiences made all the hard work worthwhile.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’d like to take a moment to express my gratitude for the chance to share a bit of my journey with you. Every step along the way has been a learning experience, with its fair share of challenges and rewards.

As I continue to grow in my career, I’m eager to embrace new opportunities and tackle whatever comes my way.

Thank you for your support, and I’m excited to keep sharing my journey with you in the future.
