Today we’d like to introduce you to Janice and Ashley Sullivan.
Janice and Ashley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Janice: I took a photography class in college when I was getting my Associates degree, just a basic black and white class. I had always thought photography was weddings, models, fashion and paparazzi, so I wasn’t very interested in it as a career, only as a hobby. Then when I went to finish my bachelor’s degree I decided to take another photography class where I met Professor Gary Colby, he showed me all the different photographers like Ansel Adams and Harold Edgerton who create art out of photography. Once I changed my major to Fine Art, my professors were guiding me towards macro photography because it was a subject I was passionate about. My senior project was featured in an exhibit in Washington DC and that was when I decided to create a career out of Macro and Landscape Photography. As I was learning new ways to create Art, I started making tutorials on what I was learning and developing so I could log my progress and I decided to upload them to YouTube. A company called Curious.com approached me to be a teacher on their website and that’s what geared me towards the teaching aspect of Photography. As I grew in the photography industry, working with Interior Designers and Art Buyers, I started getting bored with my work.
One day I was searching the internet and I came across a business called The Arcanum started by Trey Radcliffe. I then signed up and was asked to become a Master Mentor in the Arcanum and I have continued to do that to this day. As a Master in the Arcanum, I have discovered that it is my true calling to help people develop their skills and take themselves out of their comfort zone to create their own work to tell their story because I remember what it was like to feel stuck and need motivation to move forward. I am currently developing my own Membership that will launch this Fall that will focus on live calls, monthly challenges, free tutorials and bonuses to help with their photography.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always struggles when you are creating your own business, my biggest struggle has always been to stay on my course and keep moving forward when things are hard and not going the way, I want. If I am ever in a rut and feel like I’m bored or can’t do this anymore, I will take a break and go out a photograph because that is what I love and what brings me true joy and helps me get back into the groove of sharing what I love with everyone else.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
