Today we’d like to introduce you to Pheobe Madison Schrafft.
Hi Pheobe Madison, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Playing the harp has been the one constant aspect of my life since I was six years old. Throughout the peaks and valleys of my journey, the consistent presence of my harp allows me to feel grounded and connected to what truly matters. I have been blessed with committed teachers, both as a young person growing up on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and while earning a degree at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I am consistently inspired by their lessons and experience to this day as both a performer and instructor myself. Love for performing prompted my move to Los Angeles upon graduating. Playing on-screen for Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups (2015) was a particularly special experience. Currently, my focus is on creating my own music videos, performing, collaborating with other artists, and teaching. I am most grateful to LA for being home to such beautiful and unique opportunities within the arts.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Pursuing a career in music has provided plenty of obstacles to overcome. In most all of the challenges, I have been my own worst enemy. Coming to that realization in itself has been helpful. Moving forward, I strive to quiet the negative self-talk and instead foster a more encouraging inner voice.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a harpist, whether performing, recording, or teaching, my goal is to specialize my service to meet the needs of the audience, composer, fellow artist, or pupil. My early musical foundations lie in classical and Celtic compositions. Learning to improvise while at Berklee was a wonderful tool which opened my eyes and ears and enabled me to be much more free with my artistry. Playing pop styles and creating my own arrangements is a specialty.
