Thanks for sharing your story with us Jianyu and Xuejiao. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After a few years of working in photography industry in China, we kept pursuing our dream coming to the US. Two years in the New York Film Academy only made us even more passionate about visual art and storytelling.
We believe, as a director and a cinematographer, our job is not only to produce beautiful pictures but to evoke the feelings that our audience didn’t know they had. We believe in “the more personal, the more universal”.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We were very lucky that even in the most difficult times, we’ve had help and resources from great friends. Connection is a big deal in this business, but in respect of building networks, I found it more comfortable and most times more effective to not hold back your opinions but to speak up in the right way.
When two artists pair up, strong opinions can easily lead to heated conversations and sometimes even failure of the project. To find the right way, the way that works, of backing up your artistic choices, takes time and work. I think it’s very important for a storyteller to be aware that it’s not about you, it’s about the bigger picture.

Phantom Studio is dedicated to visual work including still photography, commercial videos and short films. We have the most dedicated, skilled and passionate artists working here. Either it’s a product provided by our client or a story that we find inspiring to tell, we try our best to find the unique characteristic of it so to let it stand out and evoke emotional feelings of the audience.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Passion is what we share here in Phantom Studio. When we are on a job, we want to make the best out of it, we need to make the best out of it. Because it feels good.
