Meet Charlie Croughwell of Earths Oceans Foundation in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Croughwell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Charlie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been a stuntman, stunt coordinator and second unit director for 40+ years. I began my pursuit of the stunt end of the film and tv industry in 1980. I grew up on and in the water (Ocean). The plastic has always been an issue for me. While at our home in Belize about 5-6 years ago, I was sitting on the beach contemplating life with a disheartening view of an excessive amount of plastic on the beaches.

Prior to entering or pursuing the stunt industry, I was headed in the direction of a degree in mechanical engineering. I had a great deal of time to analyze the management processes that exist for disposed of plastic and came to the obvious conclusion that what we’re doing isn’t working and with that began to look to current products on the market that are used every day and how they’re constructed. After a great deal of trial and error deconstructing products currently made with new plastics, I began to question why we don’t use discarded recycled co-mingled plastics in their place.

Many prototypes later, we’ve developed a line of weight training equipment. Patented several items and have now released our first item to the retail market via Billy Meistrell’s Body Glove and Dive n Surf. That first item is a 20-pound medicine ball manufactured using the plastic bottle equivalent of 640 standard water bottles.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think anything that really needs doing is a smooth road. As with anything, we are passionate about added attention and simply the process of developing a new concept that could benefit us and our planet in a far greater way is a challenging path but well worth whatever it takes to accomplish it. What does accomplish it mean to me? When one other manufacturer sees the benefit to our concept and is willing to pursue it with our assistance and successfully manufactures an item that moves the ball forward would be considered a first step to succeeding.

Please tell us about Earths Oceans Foundation.
Earths Oceans Foundation was created to facilitate a better solution to our current conditions for the reuse of co-mingled plastics that are choking our world. Our concept is much larger than processes currently in play. We intend to add to efforts that currently exist as they relate to the issue of plastics. I think much greater detail here would assist your development of who and what we are and where we’re going.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve been extremely fortunate in my film career and subsequent re-engineering of plastic use. We very often make our own good luck with the passion we have for what we pursue.
