Meet Jersey Bond

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jersey Bond.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jersey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a young designer wrapping up high school. Traditional school was not the right fit for me as a creative, I have been lucky enough to have parents that supported and understood that. Sophomore year I pursued an alternative education which has allowed me creative time in my studio and the opportunity to develop my interest in fashion. At a young age, I began sewing and quilting classes, my curiosity of sewing quickly led me to fashion class which has been an ongoing interest since.

In 2019, I had my first fashion show, 05.18.19 which examined my interest in the intersection of reuse/sustainability and sharing my personal challenges with Dyslexia. During quarantine, I had an incredible opportunity to be a part of the 20 years relaunch of Imitation of Christ, our creative team sewed 24 one-of-a-kind repurposed pieces. The IOC fashion show was held on July 4th as a peaceful demonstration. This fall, I will be designing a capsule collection for Undefeated using repurposed garments and applying to art schools.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Personally, I think there is no such thing as a smooth ride. Just living can be an obstacle, guess that is the point. Allow yourself to be, make, do and work. Leave the self-judgment behind. Personally, a creative life works well for me, as it allows me the ability to express life’s challenges through my work. Obstacles I guess are the work and become the art if you can hang in there through the discomfort, vulnerability and “not knowing” of making.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am still young and building my skills and experience, perhaps that will evolve into a business in time, but right now I am sticking with developing and expanding my vocabulary in fashion. As a young designer growing up in such transformative times, I strive to remain unattached to titles and instead focus on the creative process. My work is informed by observing the current social and political situations and how my generation can help rebuild and transform our relationship to clothing and fashion. I am committed to sustainability, reuse and reframing what the idea of beauty and perfection looks like, less mindless consumerization and more mindful creation.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Getting a new president, getting into art school, and creating shit that matters.
