Today we’d like to introduce you to Hazel Calderon.
Hazel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all began at age sixteen. I was walking through the mall in Miami, FL and a lovely lady approached me. She asked if I would be interested in participating in a beauty pageant. I eagerly ran home, busted through the double doors and begged my mom to please contact this pageant lady. Mary Carmen, my beautiful mother called and just like that I would be introduced to the stage. Soon after, the entertainment doors opened and I was working in the commercial market and began appearing in National Spots, telenovelas and hosting live shows. It all happened like a flash and before I knew it, I was standing on one of the biggest stages in the world. I represented my home country of Nicaragua in the Miss World Pageant. Inspiration flowed me as I began to feel that anything was possible. I decided to move to Hollywood, CA and try my luck. Here I Am!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes, it was a smooth ride, but like everything in life there was ups and downs. I think it was definitely a challenge getting to know the area. You start from scratch and it’s like a newborn baby navigating the big city. I was homesick for a majority of the first year, terribly missing my family. I was so spoiled back home that believe it or not, I had no idea how to cook. I survived with my new best friend, the microwave. We made many memories together over dinner hot food plates.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am first and foremost a talent, storyteller and a comedian. I’m known as the “Queen of TV Commercials.” I am proud to have represented Nicaragua at the Miss World Pageant. My perseverance is what sets me apart from others and I don’t ever give up.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is being able to pay your bills, travel the world and live the life you created through hard work. It’s important to live your dream and never ever give up. I’ve always stepped out of the confront zone and remained a humble student of the game. If you want to get rewarded, take risks. Jump and you’ll learn to fly.
