Today we’d like to introduce you to John Troxell.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
It started when I was about ten years old. I remember taking my first photo in the mountains. There was a light snow falling alongside the lake, my composition in this photo spoke to me for years after that.
I always remember as a child ripping pages of magazines out and creating this “wall of images” from Guess models to James Dean. Lines. Artistic lines. Structured lines.
I moved out to Los Angeles in my early twenties and entered Hollywood as a production assistant. I then moved into the camera department. I found myself a home with one of the best tabletop director/Dp’s of food for the past fifteen years.
My photography has seen many faces but truly hit home as soon as I started photographing food. It allows me to use my artistic eye, combining colors and styles from start to finish.
Please tell us about your art.
My art, my art is imagery. If not working for a client, I go to the source. Hustle, go downtown at five am for fresh seafood or flowers. Sit with something for two-three days waiting in my studio for just the right moment. Both creatively and lighting wise. I love depth, the story. My story that I create with my images.
The greatest response I get is when someone runs out to eat after seeing an image of mine. Usually happens with a steak or burger!
My artwork/photography is truly mine. I believe in what I do, even if it doesn’t get me paid as much as I’d like. But that’s where you gotta believe. Believe it will catch. Grind for that moment when it all comes together.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
It’s difficult for food photography. Everyone has a phone and camera. I’d say it’s harder and I truly would say that the most talented people sometimes get overlooked or just can’t catch a break.
I believe that Los Angeles has a very diverse food scene and if you’re into photography get it. I just like to add my artistic angle to it. So find what you like and get after it.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My Instagram account is where I hustle the most. See what people like.
My website. If people want to support my work at the moment, I’d say get me work!
