Today we’d like to introduce you to Cammy Kinney Fry.
Cammy Kinney Fry was born in Lamesa, Texas, and as a young girl, she was an avid reader and painter. Soon after finishing a degree in pre-med and the realization that being a doctor wasn’t for her, she was scouted for modeling and relocated to New York City where her modeling career spanned over a twelve year period. Influence from a strong creative network of friends as well as her extensive travel to countries such as Italy, Greece, Germany, Spain, France, Holland, Austria and Australia…proved to be the perfect artistic foundation. During her time on set as a model, she discovered her love of photography. After a decade in New York, Cammy relocated to Los Angeles (living in Venice) to spend time in the sun and be near the ocean year round . The eclectic mix of Venice life charged her artistic creativity to develop into a unique blend of raw everyday images laced with fashion and rockstar flair. Due to all of these influences, she was quickly discovered and began shooting fashion ads, campaigns, and editorials as well as having the honor or taking portraits of musicians such as Rod Stewart, Snoop Dogg, and John Mayer to mention a few. She has shot many album covers, has been published in a few music and fashion magazines, and has won awards such as the “LA Smashbox Studios Top Photographers” which had her work displayed all over the world including the LACMA Museum in Los Angeles and the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. After meeting the love of her life while visiting her mother in Texas, she relocated back to West Texas where she now focuses on family portraits, newborns, maternity, weddings, bridal, engagement, and boudoir. After such a long time away, she has grown to appreciate the simplicity of capturing the essence of the local folk, and the appreciation these people give her for the uniqueness of her work…”spurs” her on. Cammy still travels to New York and LA for work year round.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was a smooth transition from modeling to photography because of connections I had made along the way.
Who, or what, deserves a lot of credit for where you are today?
One of my dearest friends and my mentor, Brandon Finney. He is a well known and successful NY photographer that not only spurred my interest in photography…but taught me pretty much everything I know!
What kind of work do you look forward to most?
My favorite assignments are those that are fashion related or involving musicians. I really enjoy being on the other side of the camera in the fashion world and feel my past experience as a model has helped me to be good at not only making the model feel comfortable but helping the shoot to go smoothly in all aspects.
Musician portraiture is an equal love. Music has always been a HUGE part of my life and it has been both a treat and a blessing to be able to meet and capture the essence of some of the most talented artists of this lifetime.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I wish I had known early in my modeling career that I was interested in photography. If so I would have paid a lot more attention to lighting and the creative aspects during my jobs. Also, I would have asked the photographers more questions to increase my knowledge base as well as make more connections with them, the clients, art directors, and hair and makeup artists. It would also have been beneficial to have had this knowledge of my future passion so that I could have put it into practice more during all my travels to the amazing countries in which I was fortunate to work.
