Meet Amina Touray Photography in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amina Touray.

Amina Touray, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I used to say that I “started” professionally as a photographer when I moved to Los Angeles seven years ago to pursue it as a career. But when I began to look back at a series of events throughout my life, I later realized that I started a lot earlier; I was prepared to do what I’m doing now from a young age. I began as a baby and child model and stayed in that industry up until my early twenties. The whole environment of cameras, studios, “behind the scenes”, was always a natural part of me. I also traveled a lot in my upbringing between Europe and Africa, (having parents from each continent) which always inspired me to see more of the world, to capture it on film and to share those moments with others. I guess it’s not that strange that I ended up in LA, which is a city with so much diversity. This is currently my base, although I travel internationally and domestically for work.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been an interesting road, with many challenges on the way. As much as I love freelancing and being my own boss, it also puts me in a position where I have to make tough decisions on my own from time to time. It can be lonely, and I have to wear many hats! I can’t say that it’s been smooth, but I will say that each challenge has been something that I’ve learned and grown from.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Amina Touray Photography – what should we know?
I’m a photographer, art director, artist, writer, editor, that specializes in fashion, portrait & lifestyle photography. I’m most known for my portraits of women, and for capturing them in interesting environments. And I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built through my passion that I have for my company. What sets me apart is how I get to know and interact with the people that I work with. We have a lot of fun, while we’re also being productive.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family and loved ones is everything. They support and have faith in me! I also want to credit my former business photography teacher, now mentor Steven Nilsson. He’s helped me understand the many aspects of the photography industry. My former teacher David Yamamoto for all the assignments he had us do, to understand the importance of lighting. My amazing team mates Niehla O who’s a makeup artist, and Janel who’s a stylist. We’ve worked on so many shoots together, and they have been great supporters.
