Meet Sacha Baumann of Full Blede in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sacha Baumann.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sacha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m an L.A. native (born at Hollywood Community Hospital) but grew up in Santa Cruz (California), the small island Douglas (Alaska), and Park City (Utah). For most of my adult life I’ve lived equally in NoCal and SoCal, but Los Angeles definitely has my heart.

I’m a busy person, with full days (and nights) that are often filled participating in the thriving Los Angeles art scene. I live, work, make art, see art, publish a newspaper, and go to grad school in my beloved DTLA.

I’m a collage artist, creating 2D works from vintage and found paper and also self-published zines. This year I have been experimenting with some new processes and thus far have had new work in two Los Angeles exhibitions.

For just over a year now I’ve been publishing FULL BLEDE, a free contemporary broadsheet that features writing, art and design. It’s been an incredibly gratifying experience to collaborate with so many talented people and introduce their work to a wide audience. The sixth issue will launch this fall.

I also work part time as a Gallery Assistant at Charlie James Gallery in Chinatown, where I also curated an exhibition, IT’S OK. this year. At the beginning of next year I will be curating an exhibition of Los Angeles based artists at Noysky Projects in Hollywood.

Over the summer I had an intense summer internship as Museum Operations Intern at Petersen Automotive Museum, where I did an in-depth study of Los Angeles museums and their visitor services programs. Over 2 1/2 months I visited museums and interviewed nearly thirty staff members, Directors, and C-level managers at museums across the city. The research culminated in a presentation and recommendation.

I’m about to begin my final semester of grad school at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Claremont Graduate University where I am a Masters of Art, Art Business Candidate.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m naturally curious and inquisitive. I enjoy and get great personal satisfaction from experimentation and process. This comes in part from my educational background and work as a graphic designer. Designers solve problems. Professionally and personally I am always moving forward. Sure, of course there are bumps and struggles, but in general I’m a resilient, persistent, and optimistic person (thanks, Mom).

So, as you know, we’re impressed with FULL BLEDE – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My broadsheet FULL BLEDE is a free newspaper that comes out 4-5 times a year, launching at an exhibition opening or closing of a Los Angeles art gallery. For each issue I ask contributors to expound upon a theme, which is its title. Thus far I’ve published The Overshare, The City, The In-Between, The Pattern, and The Artifact. Issue Six: The Parapraxis is currently in the works.

The newspaper grew out of a lifelong love of print—I’ve been making zines, cards, and fliers since I was in grade school. My own artwork is paper-based, often appropriating printed material. When I recently lost my studio (which was housed in a large arts complex of 60+ studios), I was looking for a way to salvage artistic relationships and reconnect with artists outside of a formal gallery setting. My art practice was changing too—not having a dedicated space for creating my own work meant experimenting with new methods. The newspaper also was a way for me to flex my graphic design muscle. (I’ve been a freelance designer for years, but more recently had turned my creativity to fine art making.) Publishing FULL BLEDE combined all of these elements: I seek out and am introduced to artists, I curate and design the newspaper as well as the website, and I participate in the promotion of the arts. And all the space I need is enough room for my computer!

FULL BLEDE has been immensely satisfying on so many levels. As an advocate for the arts and artists, it gives me tremendous joy to introduce work to a new audience and be part of emerging careers. The launches are celebrations of creativity. Having the issue dispatched at a gallery opening or closing is an important part of FULL BLEDE. Artists, gallerists, collectors, and enthusiasts gather together to celebrate art.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The fall will surely be busy. I’m about to begin my final semester of grad school. I’m looking forward to a challenging and invigorating term and reconnecting with the faculty and my cohort. I’ll be traveling to Mexico City and New York City as part of my studies.

FULL BLEDE Issue Six: The Parapraxis is currently accepting submissions, so I’m just in the beginning stages of the next issue. The theme has proved to be challenging for some artists and writers, so I will be doing some outreach to talking through of ideas with contributors. This will include studio visits, which is a regular activity for me, but intensifies during the submission stage of the newspaper. Then of course the big part of the project begins: the gathering and organization of all of the submissions and then the design and curation of the issue. It is always a challenge to create an aesthetic narrative.

The end of the year is a big time in the art world and art market. There is a stellar line-up of shows coming to Charlie James Gallery that I’m excited to be helping out with.

Looking to the beginning of the next year, I’m delighted to have been invited to curate an exhibition in January 2019 at Noysky Projects in Hollywood.

Post-grad school I’m looking forward to full-time employment opportunities in the Operations/Administrative side of the arts here in Los Angeles.
