Meet Justin Key of Mindset Mgmt Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Key.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Los Angeles in 2006 from Rossville, TN after graduating from college to pursue a professional career in Acting. After training professionally and graduating from school, I immediately got representation and started working in the industry. It was indeed a dream come true.

My first gig ever was a five-year contract with Walmart. I worked consistently doing commercials and theater for years. Even after so much success early on, I realized I did not know anything about the business side of the industry. Filing taxes, saving business receipts, tracking mileage, etc. were all foreign languages to me.

So, I started researching everything that I could so I could not be just an actor but an entertainment professional. To have consistent income, I started my own tutoring company called 180 Degrees Tutoring, LLC. Since my first degree is in Mathematics, I thought I’d at least use it to my benefit. It was a hit.

An actor that’s also a mathematician? Unbeknownst to me, it was a formula for success. The company thrived, but then it started to advance more quickly than I anticipated. (Yes, I’m aware that that’s a good problem to have in business.)

To learn how to run my acting and entrepreneurial life effectively, I went back to school to get my MBA in Entrepreneurship with a focus in Entertainment. This decision changed the trajectory of my life and career! After graduation, I dissolved the company, became a college professor for over five years teaching creatives and artists the business side of the industry while simultaneously advancing my career.

Now, I own a consulting company where I strategize to help creatives and entrepreneurs leverage themselves, promote their brands and redefine their businesses. I’m cast in season 2 of GodComplX, a scripted series produced by Google. In 2018, I published my first book, Mind Control, and continuing to live the limitless life I speak about all over the country.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Struggles and Los Angeles are often synonymous at times. When you’re not a series regular or A-Lister, finances are not always coming in as others would like to believe.

There was a time when I had two jobs, doing theater at night and auditioning between shifts and still came up short on bills. I let some agents go, some agents let me go.

Auditions were almost non-existent. Times were dark. It was either rent or groceries or car insurance but not all three. I don’t come from money, so there was no safety net I could fall back on. It was just me… well, that’s what we all seem to think at that moment.

I know I have family and even friends who love and support me, but ego and pride were running ramped back then. That then triggered severe depression and crazy anxiety. The guy who was once a proud extravert became an isolated introvert. Gas was almost $5 a gallon that year, groceries were very expensive, and the bills never got smaller. I felt like the earth was closing in on me.

Luckily, I have amazing friends who helped me out of that dark place. It was never as bad as my mind made it out to be. I’m grateful for the lessons I learned, but I’ll never go back!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There’s an old African proverb that states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” That child is me, and the village is numerous. First, God is the reason, my main supporter and the defining factor for all I do and am.

My incredible southern family, extraordinary friends, mentors, teachers, and mentees are all factors for the success that I have. My manager, Helena Fils, believed in me since the first day we met and has been my biggest supporter. My producing partner, Kee Seymour, has more faith in me than I do in myself at times.

Lisa Beasley is my creative and entrepreneurship partner-in-crime. I could go on and on about the fantastic people in my life who are indeed the wind beneath my wings, but this would turn into a dissertation.
