Meet Jasmine Akakpo of Team Rebelution Films in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Akakpo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Like many artists, I got bit by the bug when I was a child. I got involved in choir when I was five and started playing piano too. From there I got involved in theatre and writing poetry to fashion design; anything creative that I could get my hands on. It’s always interesting to look back because I always did a little bit of everything and I still do. From working on productions big and small, producing, casting, acting, wardrobe, assistant directing.. the list goes on. I really am a definition of a creative. So many people have wanted to put me in a box in my career, and I really feel like the concept of artistry and existing as a creative is more accepted now.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been in perfect andante. No struggle at all. haha.

No, in all seriousness, I think my biggest struggle has been trusting myself and going with my gut. Unfortunately, I’ve gotten caught up with people and projects that weren’t surrounded by the best energy or needed to be let go. I am a fixer, I want to try to fix things and sometimes things don’t need to be fixed. There are times when your loss needs to be cut. I think giving myself a break and just knowing and trusting that I am enough has been the biggest takeaway from my struggles. We all fall short and make mistakes, that’s why we need art so much.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Team Rebelution Films is an award-winning Independent Film Production Company based in Los Angeles. It was originally created for the 48 Hour Film Project by Esther Mira, Poonam Basu, and Austin Dragovich. The three joined forces in 2017, united by their mutual love for film, a hunger for more diverse narratives, and the desire to create the absolute best film they possibly could in just 48 hours.

They assembled a diverse team of passionate, like-minded professionals, and the race was on! Currently, more than half of Team Rebelution identifies as female and includes members from diverse ethnic backgrounds, as well as members who are part of the LGBTQIA community. I am currently serving as a creative director and producing partner with Esther Mira. We are in pre-production for our first feature film!

What were you like growing up?
My name is Jasmine but my childhood nickname was Jazzy Jam. I was named after Princess Jasmine in Aladdin. The people close to me would say that I was a princess growing up but I really don’t see myself that way at all. I’ve always had a very extroverted personality but I think as I’ve grown older, I’ve morphed into this happy medium of introversion and extroversion, I’ve always had a strong voice. I was always that person that was the loudest in the room. For many that was annoying, but looking back, I feel that was pretty cool. Being a girl that was growing up in the suburbs in the south, I saw things that I didn’t like or agree with and didn’t shy away from saying my opinion. I was fearless and try to tap into mini Jazzy Jam whenever I feel discouraged.
