Meet Grant Decyk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grant Decyk.

Grant, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first picked up one of my father’s camera when I was in my early teen years, I would take photos of literally anything. I wanted to buy one of my own, but was too young for any kind of real job, I had to resort to buying and reselling high-end shoes and clothing, as well as working odd jobs, to make small profits. I eventually was able to spend all the money I had on some decent equipment. I instantly fell in love with the craft of video production, and would film skits and short films with my high school friends every week, while also working as a freelance photographer for a local Newspaper. I knew this is what I wanted to do with my life, and planned on moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film after High school. I always had a love of music, especially Rap, and skits and films turned into music videos, and soon enough I was very involved in the Connecticut underground hip hop scene. I would shoot music videos for very low budgets, sometimes free, build connections and count down the days until moving to the big city.

I have been in Los Angeles for close to two years now, completed an 18-month Film program and have met friends and business partners that I’m sure I’ll be working with for many years to come. I’ve dove deeper and deeper into both the film and music industry, building partnerships with record labels and production companies. I’m still a small town kid, working my hardest in this extremely competitive environment, doing whatever I can to support myself, and have no plans of stopping soon.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success is always a rocky one, and I am nowhere near the end. It can be hard to find support from friends and family, especially since most creative careers start as a hobby, which is very easy to not take seriously. I’ve found that the best way to prove yourself is with time and dedication, and to show everyone you have your head down chasing goals and won’t let anything get in your way. I am still very young, and almost always am working with people much older than me, and am always having to prove myself. It’s not an easy livelihood, but will certainly be worth the success and satisfaction in the future.

Grant Decyk – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are very dedicated to creating relationships with the people we work with, for, and the people that work for us. It is extremely important to have solid bond with a team that you can trust to produce quality work in a efficient manner, and the harder you work to set yourself apart from the rest, the better.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of mine so far has to be the release of a music video I directed through Atlantic Records, for my friend Hella Sketchy, aka Jacob Thureson. Jacob passed away about three months later, and I will be forever grateful of the opportunity and help that he gave me, rest in peace.
