Daily Inspiration: Meet Kaylah Cooley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylah Cooley.

Hi Kaylah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
2011 I moved to LA with my graduation money in my pocket and began my academic career at CSUN. I completed my bachelor in 2016 in family and consumer sciences with a concentration in Family Studies. I then continued my studies at CSUN for my master’s of science in marriage and family therapy. I had no idea what I was in for. The emotional demands of being a marriage and therapist in grad school was almost more than I could bear. Growing and Glowing was birthed in 2020 following one of the most difficult years of my life. In 2019 while I was in my final year of graduate school in marriage and family therapy, I was very overwhelmed by the demands of school and also nannying full time. So far away from my passion, I contemplated taking my life but decided to live in my light. 2020 blessed me to focus solely on myself and exercise radical self-care. I focused on healing myself from the inside out and realized that so much more goes into our wellness than I was even being taught in school as a therapist. I decided that I would heal myself and then help others heal themselves. My passion has always been helping others and creativity is a must for my purpose. Growing and glowing is everything self-love, self-care, growth, and wellness. We offer life coaching, incense, oils, essential oils, crystal jewelry, and apparel. We will also be adding waistbeads and loc hair jewelry this spring. And I will graduate in May 2021 with my master’s in marriage and family therapy. 💚

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At the age of 13, I lost my father to heart failure. His name was Darnell Cooley and he was a state legislative aid for the state of California and well known is his community. It shook my world but I was determined to make him proud and continue my education. Grad school was the most abusive relationship I’ve ever been in. I struggled in my graduate program almost daily due to microaggressions as well as under representation in the classroom, literature, and faculty. I was often questioned by faculty if I was sure if this was the right fit and if I really thought I belong even though my grades were impeccable and I was a natural therapist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a nanny. I have been nannying in Los Angeles for ten years but I’ve been watching kids for 16 years since I was 12. Taking care of children was always a natural thing for me. Even when I was eight all the five years old in our after school program loved me 🥰🥰. I used to watch the kids of our family friends when they would come over at 12 years old which is where my babysitting journey began. That lead me to eventually becoming a preschool teacher at CSUN associated students children’s center. I worked there for five years throughout my undergrad. I watched kids from the ages of 18 months – five years. I spent the most of my time with the 2-3 years old. I have taught in classes of up to 22 toddlers. I have nannied as many as six children at once alone. I was also a marriage and family therapist trainee where I worked with sexual assault and domestic violence clients ages 6-45 years old. As well as in a school setting with middle and high school students. I have also worked with family’s in a group therapy setting. I am most proud of what sets me apart from others is my ability to never let life dim my light 💫. You have to first grow to get the glow. Growth is uncomfortable, painful, and challenging but the other side of it is the glow 💫. That was the basis for starting Growing and Glowing.
