Tahira Yousuf of Fullerton on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Tahira Yousuf shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Tahira, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity will always come first for me. In the beauty industry, people are trusting you with something very personal—their face, their appearance, and often their confidence. When someone sits in my chair and allows me to shape their brows or create henna for a special occasion, that trust means everything. I believe it’s my responsibility to be honest about what will truly look best for them, even if it’s not always what they originally had in mind. Maintaining that trust and respecting each person’s individuality is the foundation of my work.

Energy is a very close second. Beauty is not just about the final result; it’s also about the experience. I want my clients to feel comfortable, uplifted, and confident when they are with me. Positive energy creates an environment where people can relax and enjoy the process. When the energy is good, the creativity flows more naturally, and the entire experience becomes something memorable rather than just another appointment.

Intelligence ties everything together. In this field, intelligence isn’t only about technical skills—it’s about understanding balance, facial structure, different skin tones, and the unique style of each client. It also means continuously learning, staying open to new techniques, and knowing when to guide someone toward a look that enhances their natural beauty.

Ultimately, I believe beauty should be honest, full of positive energy, and guided by thoughtful expertise. When integrity, energy, and intelligence come together, the result is not just great work—it’s an experience that makes people feel confident, valued, and truly beautiful.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a beauty artist specializing in threading, henna tattoos, makeup & hair styling, and henna tint. My work is rooted in attention to detail, positive energy, and creating looks that feel effortless while still making a meaningful impact. I truly enjoy the artistry behind what I do, whether it’s shaping brows, designing intricate henna patterns, or enhancing someone’s natural features with makeup.

What makes my work and brand unique is that I don’t believe in cookie-cutter beauty. Every face, every design, and every client is different, and I approach each person with that in mind. I take the time to understand what my clients are looking for and what will complement their natural features and personal style. My goal is always to create something that feels authentic to them.

For me, beauty is about enhancement rather than overdoing it. I focus on bringing out what’s already there and helping people feel confident in their own skin. I also believe the experience should be enjoyable and uplifting, so I try to create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where clients can feel comfortable, have fun, and leave feeling their absolute best.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
One of the people who taught me the most about work is my sister. She owned a high-end salon in Dubai and later started a chain of salons in Orange County. Growing up, I was always drawn to the beauty industry, and I loved watching how she interacted with her clients and ran her business. She had such a strong sense of professionalism and care, and that really inspired me. She was also the one who recognized the spark in me and encouraged me to pursue it. She taught me the fundamentals of the craft and helped me understand the importance of dedication, patience, and consistency.

Of course, learning didn’t stop there. Like any creative field, beauty is something you continue to develop through practice and experience. Over time, I refined my skills by working with different faces, styles, and requests.

Honestly, though, my clients have taught me the most. Every person who sits in my chair brings something new—different features, different ideas, and sometimes even challenges that push me to grow. Those moments when a client says, “Can we try this?” often lead to new techniques or creative ideas that help me improve my craft. Each interaction has helped shape the artist I am today, and I’m grateful for that ongoing learning process.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: “Be gentle with yourself.” When you’re younger, it’s easy to be hard on yourself, especially when things don’t go exactly as planned. But looking back, I realize that every challenge, every mistake, and every moment of uncertainty was actually helping shape the person I would become.

I would remind my younger self that growth takes time and that it’s okay not to have everything figured out right away. The struggles you face are not setbacks—they’re lessons that build strength, patience, and resilience. One day, you’ll look back and realize those difficult moments helped you become stronger, wiser, and more confident.

So I would simply say: trust the journey, keep going, and be proud of how far you’ve come, even when the path feels uncertain.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
One thing I believe deeply, even though it’s impossible to truly prove, is that everything happens for a reason. In life, we often go through moments that don’t make sense at the time—challenges, unexpected changes, or paths that turn out very different from what we planned. In those moments, it’s easy to question why things are happening the way they are.

But with time and perspective, I’ve often seen how certain experiences—both good and difficult—end up shaping us in meaningful ways. They guide us toward new opportunities, teach us important lessons, and help us grow into stronger and wiser versions of ourselves.

For me, believing that everything happens for a reason brings a sense of patience and trust in the journey. It reminds me that even when things feel uncertain, there is often a bigger picture unfolding that we may only understand later.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think my clients would miss the care and personal connection the most. Of course, they might miss the brows, the henna designs, or the makeup, but what truly makes the experience special goes beyond the services themselves.

When someone sits in my chair, I try to create a space where they feel comfortable, relaxed, and genuinely listened to. I take the time to understand what they want, how they want to feel, and what will help them look and feel their best. It’s not just about beauty—it’s about helping someone walk out feeling more confident than when they came in.

Most clients come to me for the first time expecting to meet a professional who will take care of their beauty needs. But after a few visits, many of them tell me it feels like they’ve found not just a professional, but also a friend they trust. That relationship and comfort level mean a lot to me, and I believe it’s part of what keeps people coming back.

For me, the real impact isn’t only in the work I do, but in the way people feel during and after the experience. If my clients remember feeling cared for, uplifted, and confident when they leave my chair, then that’s the legacy I would be most proud of.
