We recently had the chance to connect with Tamas Hever and have shared our conversation below.
Tamas, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
First, I open my eyes and scream.
After wiping the cold sweat of my nightmares, I take a cold shower, partly to wake up, partly to face my fears. I stare into the mirror, remind myself it’s time to attack the day, and let the cold water hit my hairy body like a personal challenge.
I try to practice intermittent fasting and do some writing first thing in the morning, before the world and my phone get a say in who I am that day. That said, I usually don’t do any of this because I’m already late from somewhere, so most mornings are really about improvisation and momentum.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Tamás Hevér, a Budapest-born filmmaker currently based in Los Angeles, where I’m completing my MFA in Directing at AFI. I work across narrative filmmaking and film marketing. Basically, I am trying to get paid while also being a dreamer.
I’m the founder of SetSocialz, a boutique media agency specializing in on-set content for film and television.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My biggest inspirations are my siblings. My brother is a filmmaker and an artist to the bone. He introduced me to films and music that shaped my taste early on, his sensibility had a huge impact on me. His attention, curiosity, and genuine love for the arts continue to inspire me.
My sister is my other major inspiration. She’s an incredible choreographer, as well as a mother and a photographer, with seemingly infinite creativity. What inspires me most is her love for being human and for other people. She moves through the world with generosity, discipline, and imagination.
They both give me an enormous amount of love, and that support has shaped me to who I am.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. Like every day. There are disappointments every ten minutes. From starring at a blank paper to running out of time on set, making a movie is a weird combination of a nightmare and a miracle. And still, it’s the only thing I truly want to do. I don’t know what else can make your heart and mind explode in quite the same way. The highs are incredibly high, and the lows are very low. The emotional extremes are exhausting, but they’re also addictive. Am I in a toxic relationship?
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Education has always been a core value in my life. Even though my parents are atheists, my father passed on strong Jewish values around learning and intellectual curiosity, while my mother shared her deep love for science. They encouraged me and my siblings to push ourselves, to ask questions, and to take learning seriously. Not as obligation, but as empowerment.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I would build a vampire lore about myself and scare people all the time. I already have an accent from Eastern Europe so I feel like this the perfect role for me.
