We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sharlene Lurie. Check out our conversation below.

Sharlene, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
This past year has been a transformative journey, filled with both professional milestones and personal growth. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities to participate in pop-ups, art shows, festivals and private events. These experiences have allowed me to connect with so many remarkable people, each interaction deepening my understanding of myself and my art in ways I never anticipated.

One of the most memorable moments that stands out is when I met an art collector who instantly connected with my work. She was so enthusiastic about purchasing several pieces for her Los Angeles home, and in the most humble way, she shared that my work would be hanging alongside paintings by some of the most famous artists in the world. To hear that was nothing short of a dream come true.

Why did it mean so much to me? Because to know that my art is sharing space with such prized works is a true validation of the journey I’ve been on. It’s a reminder that when you create from the heart, you’re not only contributing to a collection, but you’re also leaving a mark on something bigger. It’s moments like this that make me feel like I’ve truly “made it,” and I couldn’t be more grateful for this incredible journey.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! I’m Sharlene Lurie, a fine art photographer based in Los Angeles and the founder/owner of MY MULBERRY EYE. I’m so grateful to Canvas Rebel for this opportunity to share my story. Born and raised in the South Bay, my photography is deeply inspired by the local landscapes of California—beaches, deserts, cityscapes—and beyond. My work captures these scenes with a vintage aesthetic feel.

Art has been a part of my life from the very beginning. I’ve explored painting, ceramics and clay work, but photography has always been my true passion. Over the years, it’s evolved into both my craft and my business. I believe that my experiences in different artistic mediums enrich my photography, allowing me to capture not just images, but moments and emotions that are meaningful.

At the heart of my work is the desire to share the beauty I see in the world. I aim to transport you to a place of joy, peace, and wonder through my images. Whether it’s the golden glow of a California sunset or the quiet serenity of a desert landscape, my photography invites you to stay in the present moment and relive that sense of magic over and over again.

What makes MY MULBERRY EYE unique is its ability to evoke a personal connection. When clients tell me that one of my pieces reminds them of a cherished childhood memory or brings them back to their favorite beach or hometown, it truly fills my heart. Those moments of connection are why I do what I do—my mission is to bring beauty and inspiration into your home, office, or business, so you can experience the joy and serenity that I feel when I’m behind the lens. I’m always excited to continue creating and sharing these stories through my photography.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
As a creative, I’ve always had many layers to my Aquarian personality—independent, loyal, quirky and driven. Perfectionism has been a part of me from the start, helping me excel in school, prioritize relationships and set high expectations for myself. I’ve always believed that hard work leads to success and that mindset has served me well as a small business owner.

But as I’ve grown, I’ve learned that the pressure of perfectionism can be draining. What’s been more fulfilling is embracing the present moment, even in its messiness, instead of chasing perfection. Stay mindful. Let things go. Set boundaries with your time. Stay true to yourself. Find yourself, lose yourself, then find yourself again. Accept yourself and embrace who you are. Surround yourself with supportive people who lift you up.

Perfectionism is now a choice I can release. Creating my art has become a way for me to relax and fully be in the moment. I’m super grateful for the space I’m in and the new parts of myself I’m discovering along the way.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Thanks for such a thoughtful question. I miss my younger self. Lol. There’s soo much I wish I could say. My main advice would be: This is your life, and it’s yours to live fully. Everyone will have their opinions, their advice and their ideas of what you should be doing, but at the end of the day, only you know what truly lights you up.

For too long, I tried to please others, putting their happiness before my own dreams. Looking back, I’d remind myself that true happiness comes from making yourself a priority. Trust your instincts, follow your passions and create for yourself first. When you do, you’ll naturally attract those who align with your vision.

Art is a reflection of who you are. Create with love, clarity and authenticity, and let that energy speak for itself. All the lessons—artistic and business—have led me to a place where I can now truly say I’m living my passion, honoring my heart and sharing my journey with others.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that love is at the core of everything I do, both personally and creatively. I’ve always lived a very organic lifestyle with gratitude, cherishing every moment and capturing those meaningful experiences that shape my work and my life. For me, it’s all about loving myself, my friends and family, and expressing that love through my art.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I’ve always lived deeply connected to my feelings and instincts, knowing what feels right and wrong. For a long time, I didn’t trust or nurture that inner voice. Over the years, through self-reflection and connecting with nature, I’ve learned to trust it fully.

People often ask how I choose the right shot or angle, and the answer is simple: intuition. My passion for creating, meditation and time spent in nature help me stay present and connected to my inner source. I always find peace and feel nourished in quiet moments by the sea and in the desert. Watching the surfers ride the waves, birds flying in and out of the glittery ocean and palm trees dancing in the desert breeze allows me to capture and share those fleeting, beautiful experiences through my photography.

The key to my happiness is being fully immersed in and obsessed with what I love. I’ve learned that the beauty of life and art isn’t in what’s missing — it’s in appreciating what’s already here. As Dave Matthews put it, “What I want is what I’ve not got, but what I need is all around me.” MY MULBERRY EYE brings this to life.
