We’re looking forward to introducing you to Pooja Sethiya . Check out our conversation below.
Hi Pooja , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People often forget makeup artists have bills too— or that our products are cheap. The truth is, our kits are filled with high-quality (and very expensive) products, and our time, skill, and hygiene standards all come at a cost. Productions offering low rates for 12-hour days really need to understand the value of our work.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Pooja Sethiya, a makeup artist with over 12 years of professional experience in beauty, bridal, film, and TV. I specialize in beauty and SFX makeup, and lately, I’ve been expanding my work to include hairstyling as well.
Having worked across two countries and two very different industries, I’ve learned to adapt seamlessly to any makeup style or film set environment. I bring not only skill and creativity but also positivity and confidence to every project I’m part of.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The moment that truly shaped me was moving to Los Angeles. Coming from a sheltered home, I was never as independent as I am today. Back then, I relied on others even for the simplest daily tasks. Living in LA, all on my own, taught me how strong and capable I really am. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow—not just as an artist, but as a person—while learning to navigate new cultures and experiences along the way.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I’ve always been a naturally trusting and naive person, someone who believed the best in everyone. But through real-life experiences, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of people and situations. I truly believe everything happens for a reason — even the difficult moments. I don’t regret any part of my struggles, because they’ve made me stronger and shaped who I am today. Those lessons have helped me reach a much better place in my life, both personally and professionally.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is exactly who I am in real life — and that can be challenging at times. I have no filter, and if something bothers me, my face usually gives it away. In an industry where being overly real isn’t always seen as a strength, I’ve learned that my honesty can sometimes work against me. But staying true to myself still matters more than fitting in.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
I do regret not spending as much time with my family as I’d like. Moving so far from home hasn’t been easy, and there are days when the distance feels heavier than usual. Chasing your dreams often comes with big sacrifices, and for me, that’s being away from the people I love most. I just hope, in the end, it’s all worth it.
