Story & Lesson Highlights with Luis Estrada of North Hollywood

Luis Estrada shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Luis, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
As of recently I’m still working at my 9 – 5 at my local home improvement store. On my days off, I utilize my time for drawing. On a regular day, I like to wake up early and go for a morning run or play with my dogs. Once I’m back if I don’t have any pending art commissions, I spend time drawing for my clothing brand or just for practice. I try to draw at least once a day it can either be big or small. The rest of the day I like to watch movies or TV shows that help me get inspired to draw. I also take inspiration from everyday life.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Luis Estrada. I was born and raised in North Hollywood, California, and I create art and clothing under the name Vomit Tomb. My art consists of dark and morbid imagery. I grew up watching horror movies and reading comic books so my art really reflects that part of my life. My artwork has been used by heavy metal bands and record labels from all over the world. I design and release all my own clothing thru my website.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
I would say my father taught me the most about how hard work pays off. he was also a painter so I like to believe he gave me some of his artistic skills were passed on to me. He always taught me to work hard in life and that you can make something beautiful out of blank paper and see life in the same way.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of failure is always something that has held me back a lot. As time progressed I realized that failure happens when you don’t try. It’s important to push yourself toward new goals. If you do fall, the most important part is getting back up and fighting for your dreams.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
my friends would say that staying true to who I am is what really matters to me. I believe that not compromising my art is what really makes me stand out above the rest.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people just remember my art id hope that my art speaks for itself. But if not that then just that I never gave up on my passion. Art has changed my life in so many ways and the fact that I get the contribute to the music scene I love so much has been enough for me
