Hi Laura, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
As a Latina… a Mexican American, I’ve always been passionate about representation especially in media, where we continue to be among the most underrepresented. But now, I feel called to push beyond media and advocate for representation and equity in every space. We’re living in challenging times, and I feel a deep responsibility to stand up not just for my community, but for all those who are underrepresented, overlooked, or targeted.
In the past, speaking out on controversial issues could cost you opportunities or even your job. In many cases, it still can. But despite the risks, I’ve always used my voice and now, I use it louder and with more intention than ever before.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’ve been in radio for over 15 years and currently work as a producer at ESPN LA, where I’m helping rebrand the *D’Marco & Travis* show for its new afternoon drive slot. Before this, I worked at Entravision, KIIS FM, and Power 106.
My social name, *UneeQ*, was given to me in college because of my quirky, outspoken personality and it stuck! I’m a proud first-generation Mexican and the first Latina to have a role like mine at ESPN LA. Representation matters to me, and I’m passionate about breaking generational cycles and creating space for voices like mine in media.
Since 2017, I’ve lost over 320 lbs, and health has become a huge part of my journey. I’ve faced a lot, including near-death experiences, so every day I get to do what I love and connect with others feels like a true blessing.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, my parents taught me the most about work. My dad would wake up early every day to do long, exhausting hours in construction as a painter. At the same time, my mom was always hustling whether it was selling at the swap meet or cleaning houses, she was constantly doing something to support us. Watching them showed me the true value of hard work and dedication.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me resilience! Going through extreme weight loss, facing life-threatening moments, and navigating an industry where representation was limited all those experiences pushed me to grow, to fight, and to find strength I didn’t know I had.
Success feels good, but suffering taught me to value life, health, and purpose. It reminded me why I strive so hard to break cycles, show up for my community, and use my voice in spaces where people like me haven’t always been seen or heard.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
This one’s easy, I feel my closest friends would say that what really matters to me is family, community, representation and truly living. For a long time, I was just existing, going through the motions. But after everything I’ve been through, simply living with purpose, joy, and intention feels incredible. I’m passionate about creating space for others, especially those who’ve felt unseen, and staying grounded in the people and values that shaped me.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I was someone who never gave up, someone who showed up authentically, spoke her truth, and opened doors for others along the way. That I broke barriers not just for myself, but so the next generation wouldn’t have to fight as hard to be seen. That I lived fully, loved deeply, and left a mark by being unapologetically UneeQ. Most of all, I hope they say I made people feel like they mattered
