We recently had the chance to connect with Jasmyn Carter and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmyn, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity. I feel intelligence is something that can be learned and it’s subjective. Energy, Is a close second because everything costs energy. Integrity however, I feel is the foundation or blueprint to someone’s soul. You have to stand for something in my eyes, otherwise, what is your purpose? What are you willing to do or not willing to do? It’s too open ended for anything good.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is Jasmyn Carter. I am a stand up comedian, actress, content creator, writer, etc. I’d be here all day telling you all the things I do. I am raw, real, honest, and fun in all the things I create. I’m very versatile. I’m like water. I can take the shape of whatever I need to in that moment for the greater good but I can’t be put into a box. I’m not afraid to step on and over the line respectfully to get my point across. I’ve been doing comedy for 10 years, creating content for 13, acting professionally for 5, and writing my whole life. I’m working on a couple different scripts right now. Stay tuned.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Strangers. Strangers have always seen my greatness and potential before I could ever. They’d always tell me I was destine for greatness and that I was a star, even when this wasn’t a career and I was just doing stuff for fun. I’m forever grateful for those people because they gave me the faith and confidence to step into the person that I am. I had to hear it first though. I didn’t know it existed.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me that it is necessary. Life is about balance. So in order for there to be happiness and success there must be suffering and failure. Otherwise, the joyous moments would mean nothing. I’ve learned a lot of lessons through suffering. My self worth, what I needed to work on, life’s values, how temporary people and things are. Success could have never taught me that. Suffering is a critical part in an artist journey. We’d have nothing to create if it weren’t for suffering. We turn that same suffering into beauty that later become success. I think that’s amazing.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes it is in fact. It’s a version of me though. It’s not entirely who I am or all that I am but it is me for sure. There’s levels. I’m like an onion. I’m working on peeling back and exposing more but so far. What you see is who I am. Now that level of energy, you might not always get when you meet me offline depending on what’s going on. I might be a little bit more reserved or quiet if I’m not expecting to run into someone I know but I’m always open to meeting people. So definitely say hi.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
That there’s no such thing has forever. There’s an expiration date on everything: people, places, things, relationships. We are only given a certain amount of time on this earth and we do what we can out of it, and spend it with the people we want but nothing lasts forever and that’s okay. Someone’s version of forever might be 20 years, 2 months, 1 day, or 75 years, either way, all things come to an end and it’s okay.
