Story & Lesson Highlights with James DeLorean

We recently had the chance to connect with James DeLorean and have shared our conversation below.

James, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
In the last couple of years, I got bit by the running bug. I start most of my days with a long run in the hills. Then I’ll take my dog for a walk. Both those things ground me and give me time to ruminate on story ideas.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a TV and film writer based in Los Angeles. I’ve written on Syfy’s ‘The Ark,’ and I’m currently developing a few projects (sci-fi and thriller). I’m drawn to stories about how nostalgia and trauma shape us – and what it takes to move forward.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
In my early twenties, I met two people who emboldened me to pursue a screenwriting career: My piano teacher, Julie Bonk, and my family friend, TJ Kuenster. TJ is an incredible piano player, arranger, and he served as Glen Campbell’s band leader for over 30 years. Julie is a master musician and teacher who saw something in me before I recognized it myself.

All the adults I had met up until then had “real” jobs and thought being a screenwriter was a pipe dream. But suddenly I knew these non-famous mere mortals who made a living as musicians. It made professional screenwriting feel more tangible. That mental shift was instrumental in my coming to LA.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Not really. Sure, there have been setbacks, dry spells, and disappointments. But I’ve been writing stories since elementary school. As someone from a working class background, I always expected this road to be bumpy. But so is anything – running a business, being a parent, being a doctor. Everyone chooses (or is chosen by) a path or identity, and in doing so, they sign a contract to embrace its challenges because the journey overall makes sense for them.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
People are more alike than they are different.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope my work has an impact, however small, on someone’s life.
