We’re looking forward to introducing you to Day Mori. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Day, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Confidence, to do what I do is very bizarre and often comes with a lot of external judgement. I want people to feel free when they see me and to do that I have to be confident even though I find it really difficult sometimes. My new straitjacket escape project is very reflective of that. I used magic to be vulnerable and tell my story. I think confidence and vulnerability go hand and hand.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Day Mori and I am the world’s next great Magician. I recently filmed a straitjacket escape where I used VoiceOver and music to tell a story. It’s called running towards fear and it’s out now on my YouTube.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
A shy lonely homeschooled kid. I wanted to become who I needed.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
During my straitjacket escape, there was a moment where I almost couldn’t get out—because of the harness I had to wear to hang upside down. It severely restricted my movement, and the metal hooks that connected to the pulley dug into my body. I had to pull so hard with my shoulders that I ended up bruised across both my collarbones and hips after the shoot.
During our first rehearsal, I couldn’t escape. I had to be lowered still trapped in the jacket. I felt embarrassed, angry, and honestly ashamed. But then my stunt coordinator, Joel, came over and talked to me. That conversation grounded me. I took a breath, cleared my head, and made the decision to push through the pain.
When you’re suspended 30 feet above concrete and the blood’s rushing to your head, it’s terrifying—but the only way out is to stay calm. Joel helped me stay focused when it mattered most. Without him, I wouldn’t have made it through the final take.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My best friend Blessed (BL$$D) said this: “Being the most authentic version of yourself possible and helping everybody else learn to love themselves for who they are.”
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Hopefully that they felt impacted in a positive way, I just want to be a mirror, I want people to see themselves in me and feel proud of it.
